Rogue Ales and Spirits is one of Oregon’s longest- lived breweries. Serving the Pacific Northwest and the nation with great craft beer for so long, the Newport, Oregon based brewery and distillery is now giving back to the community with the release of Hot Tub Scholarship Lager.
Hot Tub is a German Helles Lager and Rogue has committed 10 percent of total sales of this beer to the Jack Joyce Scholarship Fund. Named for Rogue’s founder, this fund earmarks donations to those planning a career in the brewing and who are enrolled at Oregon State University’s Fermentation Sciences program. Current Rogue President Brett Joyce says the money will help educate people who may one day join Rogue’s own team as brewers, distillers, etc.
“We’re proud to help the next generation of brewers and distillers get a chance to make their dreams come true,” said Rogue President Brett Joyce.
The Jack Joyce Scholarship was established in 2014 and in its short time in existence, it has awarded $185,000 to 15 recipients. Doing that math, that works out to about $12,333 per recipient- enough to make the challenges of paying college tuition and fees far more bearable.
Many might find the name ‘Hot Tub’ an unusual choice of titles for a charitable brew, but there is a story behind it. One of the early recipients of the scholarship was asked how much the funds helped and he responded by talking about the books and tuition expenses covered with the money, then went on to say that he used part of the money to purchase a hot tub. The budding brewer’s honesty convinced Rogue to name this beer in honor of the warm, bubbling means of relaxation that this student was able to purchase, thanks to the scholarship money.
Hot Tub Scholarship Lager is available in 6- packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft from now through September. To find where this beer is sold near you, use the Rogue Beer Finder. Curious consumers can meet some past recipients of the scholarship here.
