Which destination has the cheapest beer? What’s the best place to go if you love drinking cheap beer? This is a key factor for a lot of travelers, especially those from countries where beer can easily cost over 10 dollars. Surprisingly, a similar drink can have a vastly different price if you’re in a different place. Here, we’ll explore the seven cheapest destinations if you’re a beer lover that are great places to travel to as well.
Vietnam
People don’t usually think of great beer when they think of Asia, and it’s often not that cheap compared to food costs, especially in Thailand or Malaysia. Vietnam is a great exception though, allowing you to throw back the pints without much impact on your budget. The best option is to find a bia hoi stand, a sidewalk spot with a keg beer that usually amounts to less than a dollar per liter depending on how touristy the place you’re in is. It’s not a nice craft beer, but it’s hard to complain for that price.
Laos
The beer in Laos is quite generic, all the main beers made by the brand Beerlao. It’s actually much better than most Asian beers, especially the Thai beers, and the price is great. You can buy a 500ml bottle or draft for just a dollar in most parts of Laos, or maybe a dollar fifty in the nicer establishments. You can even get cheaper options in stores if you look for obscure Chinese brands.
The Philippines
There are usually dollar beers all over the Philippines, even on popular Boracay Island, although it might be a bit trickier to find especially around happy hour. Filipinos drink a surprising amount of beer, and the San Miguel brand of Philippines beer is popular all over Asia. It’s not the greatest beer but it’s actually quite nice on a hot day. That’s mostly the only kind of affordable beer you can get in the country though since they have a good monopoly over the market.
Georgia
Georgia is well known for wine, not beer, but they actually have a really strong beer culture as well. Not only that, there’s a great selection, from big brands to microbrews all over the cities. The beer in Georgia is actually quite sour compared to most beers since that’s what the locals like, but if you don’t mind it, it’s extremely affordable. Most beers in bars will be between 75 cents to 1.25$ wherever you go. Georgians are fiercely proud of their tasty, affordable beer.
Mexico
Mexico is not one of the most affordable destinations overall for beer lovers in the world. In the cheapest bars, however, beer is available in the dollar range, although you may be paying more like 1.50$ for a 12-ounce bottle or draft. However, at that price you’ll be getting a better beer that’s easy to drink like Indio or Dos Equis Amber. If you want to pay more, there’s a slightly higher price range for a superior or craft beer like Negra Modela or Bohemia.
Nicaragua
Nicaragua is a fantastic destination for traveling, beer aside. In the past year it’s gotten a bad reputation due to ongoing protests, but things are much calmer now and best of all, the beachside beers are only a dollar. In this country, you can enjoy cheap beer all over when you explore the wonders this country has to offer.
Colombia
Colombia has a bit of a reputation as a country that likes to party, and a lot of returning travelers from Colombia will confirm that. There’s a lot of different beer brands in Colombia and tons of microbreweries and craft beer. In reality, the taste doesn’t vary much and they’re all mostly pale lagers. However, beers are usually less than a dollar in bars, so there’s not much to complain about. You can easily buy one of the national brands in the store for less than four dollars for the whole six-pack. You can also pay for imports or craft beers if you’re willing to shell out a few more dollars.
All of these countries have amazing cheap beer, but best of all, they’re all great places to travel to. Happy exploring!

For me it’s good old Houston, TX. where I live.
A surprising number of good breweries opened here in the past several years, many just a bike ride away from my house. Save the money on travel and invest in superb local beer.
