Southeast Asia is a very popular region for travellers but a lot of people miss out on Singapore during their trip. One of the major reasons that people tend to avoid Singapore is that it’s quite expensive, but it’s absolutely worth the money because there is so many great experiences to be had there. The other reason that people might avoid Singapore is that they have the wrong perception of the place. It’s undergone a lot of development in the last couple of decades and it’s now a big hub for business. That means people often think that it doesn’t have the same authenticity or rich culture that other Southeast Asian countries have and they also worry that there isn’t much for travellers to find there, as the whole place is just filled with business people. But that’s only one side of Singapore and there is actually a lot more going on there than people realize. If you’re planning a trip to Southeast Asia soon, these are just some of the great reasons why Singapore should be on your itinerary.
Cultural Diversity
One of the big misconceptions that people have about Singapore is that a lot of the cultural heritage has been lost through modernization, but that’s just not true at all. In reality, it’s actually a melting pot of all sorts of different cultures and its status as a business hub has only encouraged more diverse cultures in Singapore. There are 4 official languages (English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay) and they celebrate holidays from all sorts of different religions over there. This mix of religions also gives you the chance to visit a diverse range of amazing religious buildings and monuments and experience that cultural diversity that makes Southeast Asia such a great travel destination.

Amazing Food
There are so many great reasons to visit Asia but by far one of the best is the incredible cuisine that you’ll find there. One of the amazing bonuses of the diverse mix of cultures in Singapore is the brilliant food that creates. Because there are people from lots of different countries living there, eating in Singapore is like taking a culinary tour of Asia all in one place. You’ll get some delicious Indian curries, fragrant Chinese stir frys, and Indonesian Satays. As well as getting to try different dishes from a lot of Asian countries, Singapore boasts some amazing fusion restaurants that combine flavours and techniques from all of these different cuisines. In the last couple of years, there have been a lot of new restaurants popping up in Singapore with some world class chefs creating a modern take on its diverse and exciting culinary heritage. It was also recently rated by the Michelin guide which is always a good sign.
Good Bars
Singapore has some of the best bars in all of Asia so if you’re looking for somewhere that has great nightlife as well as a lot of great culture, you’re in the right place. In a recent list of the world’s 50 best bars, 3 of them were in Singapore. They probably are the most expensive bars you’ll find in Asia so you won’t be able to afford to go out every night while you’re there but they do make for a nice treat once or twice.
Great Places To Stay
The ongoing development in Singapore means that there is no shortage of amazing places to stay. There are a lot of business people going to Singapore all of the time so there is no shortage of great hotels to stay in. There is a good range from high end places to budget hotels so whatever your spending capacity, you should be able to find something in your price range. As well as all of the great hotels, there are always new apartments and other homes being built. A lot of this new launch property is being built with travellers in mind so you’ll never be short of nice places to stay in when you’re visiting Singapore. The prices can be fairly high if you’re looking at the more high end places but you should be able to find some more affordable accommodation if you want to.
Cleanliness
A lot of people consider this a downside because they say that Singapore is quite a clinical place but that’s a bit of an odd criticism. Singapore has a lot of strict rules about littering and general cleanliness making it one of the nicest and cleanest cities in the entire world. This makes it ideal for families that are worried about their kids health while they’re travelling.

Architecture
Good architecture is a priority for some people when they’re travelling. It’s a great way to see the history of a place and experience the journey that it’s taken as a country. Singapore is a great place for architecture enthusiasts because it has such a rich and diverse history. You’ll get a unique blend of traditional religious buildings and stylish modern skyscrapers. If you’re interested in architecture, Singapore needs to be on your bucket list.
Singapore Zoo
If you’re a wildlife lover, you absolutely have to go to Singapore Zoo while you’re out there. It’s a very interesting zoo because there is a focus on keeping it as natural as possible. There are very large enclosures and instead of metal fencing, they use natural barriers like moats and streams instead. It creates a more natural environment for the animals to live in which is incredibly important in a zoo. It also gives you a great way of getting around the zoo because you can get around by boat. If you’re not too keen on the water, you can get tram rides or even take a horse and cart to get around while you see all of the animals.
It’s such a shame that people leave Singapore out of their trips to Southeast Asia. It’s such a rich and diverse country with an amazing blend of cultures and so many amazing things to see and do so don’t miss it next time you’re nearby.
