Independence Day is right around the corner in the US, which means countless parties are gearing up to celebrate with family, friends, and fireworks. Some gatherings are better than others, though—we have all attended Fourth of July parties that we remember fondly, and some that we’d, well, just rather forget. You obviously want your party to belong to the former category if it’s your turn to host this year, so here are a few things that will ensure your festivities set the bar for the next Fourth of July.
Matching USA-themed Outfits
Wear it loud and proud! Make the founding fathers proud by getting everyone USA-themed shirts and jerseys (or at least by requiring them to come in one). Nothing like wearing your American-loving heart on your sleeve—and quite literally—on Independence Day to get into the spirit!
Legal fireworks
Laws vary between states, so check your local regulations to determine what kind of fireworks you are allowed to have near your home. Grand displays are better left to city organizers, but small fireworks like sparklers are generally acceptable. Having a few fireworks on hand is a great way to get everyone of all ages excited for the upcoming show—and they make for great photo opportunities.
Good seats to the big show
On a related note, part of your festivities might require relocating to a different venue: an ideal vantage point from which to watch your community’s fireworks display. Instead of winging it and hoping that no one has taken the good hills or parking lots before you do, conduct some research beforehand so that you know exactly where to be at the right time for prime fireworks-viewing. Everyone attending will appreciate you being proactive.
Delicious food
Burgers, hot dogs, salad, cookies, and other American staples are often what people imagine when they think of Fourth of July-worthy food. Your barbecue will almost undoubtedly include these, but why not spice them up a bit and make them healthier? Everyday Health lists a few recipes unique to each region of the US—such as dill sauce made from dill weed, mayonnaise, celery seeds, and apple cider vinegar, mixed into potato salad—that your guests will still be thinking about months later.
A prepped grill station
To prepare such food, of course, you need a well-stocked grill station. Make sure you have a the right tools and equipment that allow you to barbeque like a boss. Sure, you can get by with standard tools, but if you want to be a little extra this year, a professional-grade equipment will help you impress your guests who already have high expectations.
Creative Drinks
Speaking of drinks, sticking to traditional beer is fine, but a memorable Fourth of July party gets creative with its beverages. Get colorful drinks like red, white, and blue sangria with pineapple cut into star shapes. Or strawberries filled with blue jello shots. You can even prepare beautiful non-alcoholic drinks for the kiddos. A little bit of help and inspiration from Pinterest and you’re ready to mix!
Lawn activities
Between eating and fireworks, what else is an Independence Day staple? Lawn games, of course. Bean-bag toss, ladder toss, and croquet are classic examples of easy to set-up and play games everyone can participate in. A bit of friendly competition helps people work up an appetite and keeps them entertained for hours.
Seating areas
You can’t expect your guests to stand around all evening, and whatever patio furniture you have might not accommodate everyone. So why not set up Hammock chairs or bring out cute picnic blankets–these are a fun way for people to sit, eat, and converse. You can also use folding chairs, which are easily packable so that you can take them to the fireworks show and store them for later use.
