Austin, Texas based Adelbert’s Brewery has thrilled its fans as of late with new releases, canned offerings and the like. Today, the award- winning brewery is ready to excite its loyal fan base not by introducing something new, but with the return of an old favorite with the re- release of Sundowner, a Biere Brut that was last offered more than a year ago.
Sundowner is an interesting beer like no other, combining taste elements of wine and beer into a single product. The beer is, in fact, brewed using champagne yeast and the bubbly body features flavors such as spice and fruit, namely green apple and white grape, for an alternative adult beverage taste that is much like bubbly champagne but with an obvious malt beverage dimension.
Biere Brut is a style of beer brewed mostly in Belgium and these beers are known for their time- consuming maturation process. Sundowner continues this tradition, with three full months of bottle conditioning prior to its release. Biere Brut is rare in the United States and Adelbert’s is the first Texas brewery and one of only nine American brewery to brew this style. Adelbert’s Founder and Brewmaster Scott Hovey says the emphasis on canning beer and creating a new sour line of beers meant that Sundowner had to be skipped last year, but vocal fans convinced him to bring it back.
“Due to our focus on cans and new fruited sour line, Sundowner did not make it to market last year,” said Hovey. “However, it has continued to be one of the most requested beers we’ve made. We listened and are excited to bring it back to our customers. It is a great crossover style perfect for beer lovers and non-beer fans to enjoy together!”
Austin residents will get first crack at Sundowner when it debuts in the Adelbert’s Taproom on Thursday, August 3. There will be 30 cases available for this initial release. For everyone else, Adelbert’s Brewery plans to release 100 cases to accounts across the state next week, with another 35 cases available to purchase online through Tavour at a later time.
Adelbert’s Sundowner is best served in a flute glass at a temperature between 45 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The brewery recommends drinking this Biere Brut with oysters, crab cakes, or goat cheese and, of course, it’s great all by itself to share with friends or family. The release is limited, so if you want to get a bottle or two, be sure to visit the brewery or be on the lookout at places where Adelbert’s is presently sold.
