Maine is a state known for its wide-open wilderness and it is one of fourteen U.S. states that celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Today, October 12, 2020, happens to make the celebration of this important day and Maine’s own Allagash Brewing is marking its importance by reflecting on its own name and contributing to a worthy cause.
Many who live outside the state of Main are not aware, but Allagash Brewing takes its name from the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a 92.5 mile long stretch of pristine wilderness in the northern part of the state. The name “Allagash” is taken from the Penobscot word for “bark stream” and for those who are unaware, Penobscot is the name of a group of indigenous people who happen to be a federally recognized tribe in Maine.
To celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the people who have inhabited Maine long before the United States was ever dreamed of, Allagash Brewing is working with Nibezun. Nibezun is an indigenous community that is located on sacred Wabanaki land along the Penobscot River in the state of Maine. These proud folks keep the spirit of Wabanaki alive through cultural preservation. They promote sustainability and strive to educate the public on their culture and customs.
Allagash Brewing has designated Nibezun as its Tasting Room Charitable Partner this month. Funds from the tasting room partnership, along with a $2,500 grant, will be donated to help the people of Nibezun install a solar array on their sacred lands. It’s a way of giving back, while supporting the people who have helped keep the area naturally beautiful and remind us all to be active stewards of the planet we inhabit.
We at Great Beer Now applaud our friends at Allagash Brewing for their act of generosity and for doing their part to support the Nibezun Project and its efforts to reclaim ancestral lands, keeping Maine naturally beautiful for generations to come. Cheers to all, and be sure to visit Nibezun to learn more about this important cause and to make a donation of your own.
