Texas craft breweries exist across the Lone Star State landscape, in cities large and small. Practically every one of the state’s larger cities with over 100k population boast at least one brewery and cities like Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin claim dozens.
One larger city has been devoid of craft breweries for some time. That city is Beaumont, but today this Southeastern Texas town is now the home of two brand new breweries: Pour Brothers Brewery and Struggle Street Brewing. Each of these breweries opened over the past weekend, just one day apart, adding a much need brewing presence to a city that has been brewery- deficient for many years.
Pour Brothers, located at 585 Wall Street in downtown, had a grand opening party on Friday, September 27, 2019. This brewery is unique in the way that it serves beer. Rather than step up to the bar and have your glass filled by a bartender, Pour Brothers provides its customers with an RFID card that can be used to self- serve beer from taps. Once a customer has been served 32 ounces of beer, the card is deactivated, and they must check back with a member of the staff if they want more.
Beer bars already exist that use this self- serve technology, but it is not something you typically see in a brewery. It’s a unique experience that should help Pour Brothers distinguish itself from other beer bars in the area. Founders Joel Hollier, Nick McLaughlin, and Michael Broussard could very well be onto something interesting with this concept.
Struggle Street Brewing, located at 2140 Calder St., celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, September 28. This operation was established as a brewpub and the plan is to offer rotating food options for customers. With the beer, Struggle Street owner Scott Reaves plans to brew and serve a wide variety of beers, among them a peanut butter and jelly tart that will be quite unlike anything most craft beer fans in the area have tasted before.
Struggle Street Brewing features a more traditional brewpub setup, with tables and chairs on the inside and an outdoor patio. It will utilize a small system that brews only a few barrels per batch, but don’t worry- the plan is to have a good variety of house brewed beers on tap at any given time along with popular beers from other regional breweries.
Beaumont, Texas is a city with close to 120,000 population and its people have been without a brewery to call their own for many years. With the addition of Pour Brothers Brewery and Struggle Street Brewing, Beaumont residents now have a pair of establishments brewing and serving craft beer right in their own hometown.
Cheers to these two new breweries and cheers to the people of Beaumont- your wait for hometown beer has finally ended, hopefully for good.
I love it when great new breweries open. They bring such an influx of people together and create new little communities and I love that…seeing strangers become friends while enjoying an evening out. These two places sound great and I hope they’re both super successful!!
Exactly the reason I love America’s craft beer scene! I can’t wait to visit both places
Love a good craft beer! This sounds like it’s worth the trip from Houston.
I plan to visit both places very soon!
