Living in a warm, sunny climate you might suspect that I’m the type who likes to get away from the heat. For the most part, this is true but I still love a roaring fire and I love to cozy up next to a firepit with my favorite beer in hand. I like firepits even more when they are multi- functional and a firepit I recently discovered that doubles as a flame display and a means to prepare food is Biolite Firepit Outdoor Smokeless Wood & Charcoal Burning Firepit and Grill.

Fan Those Flames
Biolite is a compact firepit that doubles as an outdoor grill. You can use it with either wood or charcoal and you can also get an additional oblong iron skillet insert for the top, perfect for grilling meat, frying eggs, etc. Just get the fire going, add the iron insert on the top, and you’re ready to grill meats in your backyard or prepare a meal while camping.
Lots of firepits double as grills, but what stands out with Biolite is its electronic fan. There are four settings and with the added airflow, you can build up your fire to a roaring flame in a short time. Just get the fire started, place the cover on top, then slowly increase the air speed. In no time at all, you will have a fire that is red hot and perfect for ambiance or grilling. You can even charge your electronic devices with this grill and if you like, you can download a Bluetooth app that lets you control the airflow setting from your seat.
Firepit Frenzy
Biolite is my type of firepit. I don’t normally involve myself with camping or cooking outdoors, but I do love a good fire. Even when it’s already warm- like it commonly is here at Great Beer Now headquarters near the Gulf of Mexico coast- I still love the ambiance of a fire. Few things can stimulate the visual senses quite like an open flame and with beer added to the setting, I can sit back, sip on my favorite beverage, and watch the orange flames dance in the sunlight or moonlight.
Getting this fire started does take some work so let me fill you in on a few things. The inside of this firepit is somewhat small and that means you have to approach the building of a fire a little differently. Paper alone isn’t likely to work and because you cannot easily access the area underneath, you cannot build a fire like you would with, say, a fireplace. It is best to get your hands on pre- treated wood sticks designed for kindling. I tried several approaches with no luck, but the ready- made wood sticks did the trick. I started with the airflow turned off, lit the ends of the wood sticks, quickly added chunks of wood and small logs, then placed the metal cover on top. Once I could see the flames starting to grow, I turned up the airflow to the third setting. The flames spread quickly and in a matter of minutes, I had a full- blown fire with flames shooting upward- the perfect backdrop for a relaxing mid- afternoon with a delicious craft beer in hand while I rocked back and forth on my wicker patio furniture. And with the open mesh on the sides of the firepit, you can see and feel the flames and heat, even with the cover in place.
One of the cool things about this firepit is that it doubles as a charcoal grill. In fact, given its compact size, one could say that it is best suited for this purpose. Just adjust the metal grate, pour charcoal inside, grab lighter fluid, and the heat is on! In a short time, you will have a red-hot charcoal grill, perfect for preparing a quick meal.
With the fire going strong, you do need to be careful how you handle Biolite. There are plastic coverings on the lid so you shouldn’t have any trouble placing or removing the metal lid, even when the fire is raging. The same cannot be said for the firepit itself. There are handles on the side to grasp and move it from one place to the next, but there is no plastic covering on these handles. If the flames are flying high, it will be too hot to grab these handles. You will have to wait until the flames die down a little before you try to transfer the firepit from one place to another.
Light my Fire
Biolite Firepit Outdoor Smokeless Wood & Charcoal Burning Firepit and Grill is a practical means to a quick source of flames. The electronic airflow system provides just the amount of air movement needed to launch a fire quickly and keep it burning brightly.
Because Biolite is portable, it can be folded up and taken to a campground, to the beach, or to any other place where there is sufficient space for lighting and grilling. I like using mine in my backyard next to my pool. I prefer mine for ambiance more than anything. There is nothing quite like the look and feel of flames accompanied with my favorite beer for a peaceful and memorable afternoon or evening just steps from my beer fridge.
Living in the Houston, Texas area means I am often subject to warm, humid weather and spend more time looking for ways to stay cool than ways to stay warm. Still, I love the atmosphere that a fire provides and the Biolite Firepit is great for this purpose. It is small, compact, and ready to help you build a fire quickly with its electronic airflow system- a feature that easily sets it apart from the typical outdoor firepit.
I love a fire pit. it really brings a lovely warmth to the yard and I do not mean the physical warmth from the grill.
