Sierra Nevada Brewing is adding a new member to its executive staff, someone who has a long history in the brewing world as an educator and researcher. The man is Charlie Bamforth, former Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences at the University of California- Davis and a man otherwise known as the “Pope of Foam” for his brewing knowledge.
Bamforth retired at the end of 2018 from his professorship and could have easily called it quits and retired from work completely. But then, Sierra Nevada Brewing founder Ken Grossman came knocking and Bamforth was quickly convinced that a little more work might not be such a bad idea.
“It would have been very easy to have completely retired after leaving UC Davis,” said Bamforth. “However, when Ken Grossman invited me to be a part of the brewing company that has impressed me hugely for so long, I just could not miss the opportunity. I am proud and delighted to have accepted this role.”
Bamforth will be responsible for evaluating all aspects of production and will provide employee training that focuses on beer quality. Grossman says Bamforth’s addition to the Sierra Nevada Brewing team will help ensure that standards remain at the highest possible level.
“Charlie brings an amazing level of scientific depth, teaching and lecturing expertise, but he also brings a deep and practical understanding of the challenges inherent in operating a brewery,” said Grossman. “I believe that there is always room for improvement; adding Charlie to the team is another way to ensure that Sierra Nevada provides the finest quality beer.”
Bamforth is best known for his research on beer, but his resume is far deeper than the recent experience at the University of California- Davis would indicate. Back in the 1990’s, Bamforth served as the Director of Research at Brewing Research International. Before that, he worked at Bass Brewery. His knowledge in the world of malt beverages and fermentation make him among the most sought- after experts in his field.
Congrats to Sierra Nevada Brewing and a big thanks to Charlies Bamforth for holding back on retirement and sharing his professional experience with the brewing industry for a little bit longer.
