Celiac Awareness Month takes place in May and for beer lovers who suffer from this disease, malt beverage options are few and far between. Beer naturally contains gluten and the few gluten- free beers on the market often taste only remotely like a true craft beer should. But there are a handful of tasty gluten- free options and one brewery that specializes in gluten- removal from beer is Omission Brewing Company.
Omission Brewing has been committed to producing great tasting gluten free beer since 2012 and it set the stage for other gluten- free brew when the company launched six years ago. Omission doesn’t brew beer using gluten free ingredients. Instead, it utilizes a scientific process to remove the gluten from beer and it has its beer tested for gluten by a third party. The test results are made available on Omission’s own web site so that celiac sufferers can feel confident.
Omission Brewmaster Joe Casey says his desire to brew a delicious, gluten- free beer has personal roots.
“Omission started out as a passion project after my wife was diagnosed with celiac disease,” says Casey. “I remember the day she took her first – and second! – taste of Omission, and ever since then Omission has been winning consumers over for its great taste. Celiac Awareness Month is a great moment for society to realize what those suffering have to avoid – but a good brew should never be one of those.”
Omission started off with a couple of gluten- free beers but has since expanded its offerings to four:
- Omission Ultimate Light– Perfect for the light beer and calorie- counting crowd. This beer is brewed with citrusy hops for real beer taste and it contains only 99 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving.
- Omission Pale Ale– Featuring the great taste of Cascade hops and caramel malts, Omission Pale Ale is easy drinking and the taste will quickly make you forget about its gluten free properties.
- Omission IPA– Those who want a bolder, more hop accented beer will love Omission IPA. The beer is hoppy, like an IPA should be, but also maintains a good deal of balance thanks to the malt additions.
- Omission Lager– A traditional lager beer, Omission lager has the smoothness and easy going flavor you expect in a fine lager.
Omission brews its beers using the finest ingredients and to start the gluten elimination process, the brewing enzyme Brewers Clarex is added to the fermentation tanks. This enzyme breaks apart gluten protein chains, resulting in beer that is essentially gluten- free while still tasting the way a craft beer should. The final product is gluten reduced to the point that only 20 parts per million or less remain. This is low enough to make Omission safe for most any celiac sufferer.
Celiac Awareness Month is an important time to think more about the disease and those who have it, while also being a time to celebrate with an Omission beer. It’s got the real beer flavor that craft beer drinkers demand and makes an excellent choice for those who have to deal with the diet- limiting choices that celiac disease demands on a daily basis.
