International Women’s Day is behind us, but the celebration is only beginning at Oskar Blues Brewery.
Starting March 13, 2017, Oskar Blues will release SHE’Boogie Bop, a limited-release lavender vanilla cream ale. This special brew was crafted by the sweat and labor of women and it will be available at the Oskar Blues Colorado Taproom and restaurant locations. Oskar Blues brewer Diana Locatelli says the project was great fun and it was nice to help further break down these common brewing stereotypes regarding men and women.
“It’s pretty obvious that the production-side of brewing is male-dominated. I think ladies-only day was a rad way to celebrate being brew chicks. We had a lot of fun making SHE’Boogie Bop,” said Locatelli.
Cream ale has its roots in American brewing tradition. This style is noted for its light, crisp body with a slightly sweet flavor that adds to its drinkability. SHE’Boogie Bop was brewed using corn, wheat, and pilsner malt along with added vanilla beans and lavender for distinct flavor attributes.
Locatelli was joined in her brewing efforts by Kristin Hubbard, Sara Laurienti, and Lauren Laquerre. Hubbard and Laurienti are both Cellar workers and both Hubbard and Locatelli have been working for Oskar Blues for almost two years. Laurienti has been with Oskar Blues since she was 16 years old and all four women started off as homebrewers. The collaboration required the ladies to rearrange thier schedules and it was an effort that Hubbard found especially refreshing.
“I just wanted to hang out with my girls,” said Hubbard. “We’re constantly surrounded by dudes and I thought it’d be cool to bring us together for the learning experience.”
SHE’Boogie Bop will be available beginning March 13 and continuing while supplies last. The beer will be offered at Oskar Blues’ Tasty Weasel Taproom, Homemade Liquids & Solids, Lyons’ Grill & Brew, Chuburger, Chuburger RiNo and Cyclhops Bike CANtina. The Tasty Weasel Taproom will hand out one pint of SHE’Boogie Bop free to all female brewers provided they show an official ID, like an AHA card or business card. This limited release beer won’t be around for long so grab a pint while its available.
