Homebrewing enthisiasts, take note: You have a chance to not only win a contest for your artisanal malt beverage creation, you also have a chance to have your beer brewed on a professional brewing system and served at an official event.
The competition I’m referring to is sponsored by Central Oregon Beer Week (COBW) and the Central Oregon Homebrewers Organization (COHO). These two are collaborating on a special Pro-Am Homebrew Competition and the winner of the contest will have his/her beer brewed on a commercial- style brewing system and served during COBW in May.
Here are some guidelines to follow:
- Competition is open to any homebrewer age 21 and older
- Any style can be submitted, but the beer must be ale- no lagers allowed
- The maximum alcohol level allowed is 8.5 percent by volume
- No wood or barrel aged beer will be accepted
- Excessively creative beers that require unusual or hard- to- find ingredients will be excluded. This is due to the potential high cost to brew them in large volume. This means that fruits, vegetables, spices, rare malts, etc cannot be used. If in doubt, contact COHO for confirmation.
- Any variety of yeast is acceptable, but bear in mind that a commercial brewery may not be able to duplicate what you use, so it’s best to play it safe.
The deadline for entry in the contest is Saturday, April 6. Entries must be delivered to The Brew Shop in Bend, Oregon by the cutoff date. The beer will be judged by a panel from the Central Oregon Brewers Guild and COHO. The winning beers will then be brewed in April to be served at a Beer Week event in May.
