Florida’s Cigar City Brewing has added another beer to its year- round lineup, a beer that is bound to thrill the hop fanatics among us. The new beer is Florida Man Double IPA, a hopped- up brew that pays homage to the many people who are often singled out in news stories for the frequently unusual goings- on in the Sunshine State. The new beer will be distributed throughout Cigar City Brewing’s 41 state distribution footprint as well as in select international markets.
This new beer’s name, as mentioned, is all about the people from Florida and how they seem to have a reputation for doing odd, shocking, and unusual things. We’ve all seen news headlines that begin with “Florida man taken into custody for…..”, or “Florida man caught soliciting……” Fill in the blank as creatively as you like- there is quite possibly a real life news story to match. A few years ago, several social media outlets started to compile a list of these unusual happenings and came up with a mythical person “The World’s Worst Superhero, Florida Man” to assign credit. This served as inspiration for the new Cigar City beer.
Neil Callaghan, Brand Manager at Cigar City Brewing, says the new beer is befitting of his company, a brewery known for embracing the local culture and what makes it special.
“Our brand has always been informed by the elements that make Florida a unique, special place. With Florida Man Double IPA, we’re embracing some of the stranger and more sensational things about our home state,” says Callaghan. “While the mythos around Florida Man is difficult to define, it’s safe to say that if a news story includes exotic animals, bizarre mugshots, fast food drive-thrus or paternity tests, Florida Man is likely behind it.”
Cigar City Florida Man Double IPA is brewed using Citra, Azacca, Mandarina Bavaria, and El Dorado hops with English ale yeast. The combination of ingredients leads to flavors such as nectarine, clementine oranges, guava, honeydew, and stone fruit. The beer weighs in at 8.5 percent alcohol by volume.
Florida Man Double IPA is set for release in late January/early February, 2020 in select United States markets. It will eventually make its way across the entire Cigar City distribution network by early spring. Look for it where Cigar City Brewing beers are presently sold.
