Massachusetts- based Mass Bay Brewing launched into the world of ciders in the summer of 2019 with its City Roots brand. Now, the company has expanded into the realm of seasonal cider offerings with a winter seasonal: Evergreen Cider, a product with a name that invokes the best that winter has to offer, but also the excellent comfort that comes from staying indoors on a cold, windy day.
In case you weren’t already aware, Mass Bay Brewing is the parent company for the popular Harpoon Brewing, one of the oldest craft breweries in the United States, and Clown Shoes Brewing, an acclaimed craft brand with a wide following. The company decided to expand into ciders only a short time ago and its Evergreen Cider continues its pursuit for a well- crafted beverage that goes far beyond the usual flavor of apples present in traditional ciders.
What makes Evergreen Cider different is its ingredients and process. The cider is fermented using a Nordic farmhouse yeast strain and is conditioned on juniper needles. The juniper makes the cider crisp, peppery, citrusy, and herbal in flavor. The cider is gluten free and boasts a modest 6% ABV, with 7 grams of carbs and 2 grams of sugar.
Another reason to try this and other City Roots products is the brands commitment to the environment. City Roots is a member of 1% for the Planet, a non- profit organization based in New England. Through this affiliation, City Roots contributes 1% of all sales to nonprofit organizations that focus primarily on urban sustainability. 1% for the Planet has been around since 2002 and during its 18 years, it has helped raise millions of dollars for environmental nonprofits in the United States and around the world.
With the launch of Evergreen Cider, City Roots now has three ciders in its brand portfolio. The original City Roots Dry cider is still as popular as ever and the new City Roots Cider Spritz, with its low, 97-calories and extra carbonation, are the other two City Roots ciders available. There are certain to be others in the future and if you haven’t tried any of them, I recommend tracking the brand down and discovering for yourself how delicious a crisp, well- crafted cider can be.
