Waiting for anything can try one’s patience, but this is especially true when the waiting takes place at an airport. “Arrive at an airport at least two hours early”, they tell us, “and you will be assured of getting through security and making it to your gate on time.” What they don’t tell you is that arriving early means spending a good deal of time pressing buttons on your cell phone, checking email or trying to beat your best Candy Crush Saga score. But airports are getting better, and many have now become havens for great craft beer. Such is the case with Land-Grant Brewing, a new tap room and restaurant just opened at John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Columbus, Ohio.
Land-Grant Brewing is the product of HMSHost Global, a restauranteur that specializes in creating dining and drinking options for travelers. HMSHost Vice President of Business Development Kent Vanden Oever says the new brewpub and its sports atmosphere are perfect for travelers who want to experience the culture of Columbus just steps away from their airport gates.
“Working with John Glenn Columbus International Airport and Land-Grant Brewing Company to open this new bar and restaurant is so exciting because we are giving travelers access to one of the most popular craft breweries in Columbus,” said Vanden Oever. “Land-Grant is great for the airport because it represents locally-made beer and home sports teams. It’s a fun atmosphere; it creates a sense of place and shows local pride.”
Land-Grant Brewing Columbus Airport will serve its tasty suds from an eight- beer tap system. The first beers flowing from the taps will include Land-Grant’s 1862 Ale Kölsch, Greenskeeper Session I.P.A., Son of a Mudder Brown Ale, and Stiff-Arm I.P.A. The other taps will serve seasonal beers which will, of course, rotate throughout the year.
Food will be an important component of the Land-Grant Brewing experience and HMSHost chefs have crafted some amazing food options, most of which are made specifically to complement the beer. Options like the Greenskeeper Reuben with kraut flavored with Land-Grant’s Greenskeeper Session I.P.A. and dirty chips with a barbecue sauce flavored by Land-Grant Son of a Mudder Brown Ale and sure to be a hit with the craft beer crowd. Other foods include a barbecue chicken sandwich and a barbecue chicken flatbread, both of which use the house-made barbecue sauce. And if your stomach is craving vegetarian foods following that three hour flight from Las Vegas, you might like the black bean burger, caprese flatbread, or possibly the power wrap, made with a spinach tortilla loaded with a variety of fresh vegetables and red quinoa.
Columbus Regional Airport Authority President & CEO Elaine Roberts likes the local flair that HMSHost brings to the city’s large and expanding airport.
“HMSHost shares our commitment to bringing local flavors into the CMH terminal for passengers to enjoy,” said Roberts. “Land-Grant is already a big hit with Air Canada, American, Frontier and United passengers in Concourse B. We look forward to collaborating with HMSHost on additional restaurants in the near future, including a new full-service Starbucks that will be open 24/7 in the pre-security food court.”
HMSHost has many more ideas planned for the John Glenn Columbus International Airport, with a Samuel Adams themed bar called American Craft Tavern, a sports centered eatery named PGA Tour Grill, and a new Starbucks store all planned for Concourse C.
