Oregon is easily one of the most scenic states in America and its largest craft brewery is celebrating the many natural wonders of the state with a new beer, Pacific Wonderland Lager, a beer brewed by Deschutes Brewery in Bend. Deschutes Brewmaster Veronica Vega says the beer was formulated specifically to represent the great state of Oregon and what it offers.
“When we set out to create Pacific Wonderland, we wanted to capture the diverse spirit of Oregon in a single beer that we could share with everyone. Our team explored something a little different, creating a lager by style and then dry hopping it to make something unique – just like our home state,” explains Vega.
In a craft beer world dominated by ales, Pacific Wonderland breaks with the popular trends. This beer is a lager and is brewed using pilsner malt and a trio of hops that includes Hallertau Herkules, Hallertau Mettelfruh and Tettnang Mandarina. The end result is a beer that is crisp and clean, with a flavor profile that features citrus, floral and herbal hops backed by a subtle malt body.
In keeping with the Oregon spirit, the beer’s label depicts the many amazing outdoor activities that endear the state to its residents. “Pacific Wonderland” is, in fact, a nickname often given to Oregon by those who visit the state to partake in skiing, biking, surfing, hiking, rock climbing, and more. The diversity of the Oregon landscape and climate make it ideal for seasonal sports and Pacific Wonderland is brewed to capture this spirit.
Pacific Wonderland Lager contains a modest 5.5 percent alcohol by volume and 37 IBUs of bitterness. The beer will be sold on draft and in six packs throughout Deschutes Brewery’s large distribution area. In the early spring, Deschutes plans to offer the beer in 12 packs, for greater consumer choice. It sounds like a delicious offering and one I cannot wait to get my lips around when I find it in local stores.
