Borrowing a sound bite from the campaign of a soon- to- be former U.S. president, DogFish Head Brewery says “Yes, We Can” to a concept some say is long overdue: Dogfish Head beer packaged in metal rather than glass. Starting today, November 7, 2016, Dogfish Head will release its famed 60 Minute IPA in cans followed by Flesh & Blood IPA and SeaQuench Ale in metal in early 2017. Dogfish Head founder and president Sam Calagione says it took time, but he now sees the value and viability of metal cans for beer.
“Early on in the craft brewing renascence I was underwhelmed with the canning technology for craft beer,” said Calagione. “But times have changed, equipment has evolved, and we’ve designed a beautiful, state-of-the-art Krones can line that delivers the quality and consistency our consumers have come to expect from our beer.”
Dogfish Head has an ongoing business relationship with Krones, a German- based packaging and bottling machine manufacturer known as a world leader in its field. Since 2013, Dogfish Head has relied on Krones for its bottling line and has experienced great success. It only makes sense that Krones would be selected once again, this time for Dogfish Head’s canning needs. The efficient machinery can fill and seal at the rate of 267 cans per minute. This is enough to keep pace with the high demand while also maintaining DogFish Head’s commitment to quality.
Speaking of the cans, in case you haven’t already seen them, Dogfish Head created a new design for its packaging, a collaboration between Dogfish Head’s own personnel and design firm Interact. Each can is date stamped for freshness and the new design is reflective of a new beginning- one that encompasses the past while also looking forward to the future. Calagione notes that the labor of love and commitment to high standards, both on the part of his company’s personnel and that of outside businesses, is the key to Dogfish Head Brewery’s many achievements.
“We’ve been able to grow from the smallest brewery to one of the top 20 craft breweries in the country, and we’ve done it in part by investing in world-class people and world-class equipment,” Calagione says.
Canned versions of Dogfish Head beer will be distributed throughout the brewery’s distribution network, but will make their way to the Mid-Atlantic market first before going nationwide in early 2017. Look for them at a store near you, and relish in one of American’s greatest and most reliably consistent IPA enclosed in metal for the first time.
