Dogfish Head Brewery isn’t a company to shy away from innovation and change and its penchant for modernizing its product line and adapting to evolving tastes and business practices is evident in everything from its beers to its packaging. One of Dogfish Head’s newest beers is the product of this corporate philosophy. It’s Flesh & Blood IPA, the brewery’s latest year- round brew, slated for national release in cans on January 16, 2017.
Flesh & Blood IPA might sound like an odd name for a beer, but it actually takes its name from the fruit- forward ingredients used in the brewing process. The beer is made using orange peel, lemon flesh, and blood orange juice to create a fruity, hoppy beer with refreshing qualities. Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione says Flesh & Blood is a testament to his brewery’s commitment to fresh, natural ingredients.
“Because we derive flavors and aromas from actual fruits you would recognize at your local farmers market and not jugs or buckets of flavoring created in a laboratory, you will not see statements like ‘brewed with natural flavors’ or ‘natural flavors added’ on our labels,” says Calagione. “Recently released annual culinary studies populated by the National Restaurant Association demonstrate that consumers continue to be wildly passionate about fruit-infused, all-natural beers, as minimally processed, organically fresh products are preferred by the consumer.
Fruit infused IPA are one of Dogfish Head Brewery’s many passions. Sam Calagione and crew have worked hard over the past twenty- plus years to perfect this style and Dogfish Head was, in fact, the first American brewery to bottle and ship fruit flavored IPA on a national scale.
“We’ve been experimenting with fruit and citrus IPA’s since 1996 when we released Aprihop, an IPA brewed with apricots,” Calagione says. “We think the fruit IPA category will surge the fastest in 2017 and we are proud of Dogfish Head’s innovator position in this realm”, Calagione added.
Flesh & Blood IPA is brewed using Warrior hops, Centennial hops, and an experimental hop along with real fruit for a citrus- forward and highly quaffable brew. The 7.5 percent alcohol by volume, 45 IBU beer is now packaged in cans and can be found in retail outlets where Dogfish Head beers are presently sold.
