Spring time is here and besides blooming flowers and warmer temperatures, spring is also a time to think about beer. Austin- based Alamo Drafthouse, the movie cinema and craft beer haven, is creating something unique for the season; bringing together the two things it knows best- beer and movies- into a single creation. It’s Everybody Wants Some Beer, a collaboration effort with Austin Beerworks celebrating the movie of the same name.
Everybody Wants Some is a newly released sports comedy about college baseball players in the 1980’s. The movie is directed by Austin native Richard Linklater, making the film a perfect match for a collaboration effort between two businesses based in Texas “weirdest” city. Linklater confers that Everybody Wants Some is definitely a movie made for beer and is honored that Alamo Drafthouse and Austin Beerworks selected his film as inspiration for their special brew.
“This is definitely a beer drinking movie…it’s a big piece of that hard partying college world”, said Linklater. “It’s flattering and fitting that these two institutions in my own backyard, Alamo Drafthouse and Austin Beerworks, would team up to celebrate the release of Everybody Wants Some in this way. Downing a can or two of beer while watching it certainly feels appropriate- but you should probably resist any urge to shotgun them.”
Alamo CEO and founder Tim League feels the movie is a perfect fit for his business.
“We love celebrating films and filmmakers we’re passionate about in unique ways and we love beer. We like to say ‘Drafthouse’ is in our name for a reason,” says League. “Paying tribute to Rick’s latest with a one-of-a-kind beer from one of my favorite breweries? It’s exactly the kind of project that excites us and blurs the line between work and fun.”
Austin Beerworks head brewer William Golden notes that Everybody Wants Some Beer is the perfect match for both the spirit of the movie and his brewery’s own easygoing style.
“Everybody Wants Some is our favorite kind of beer: extremely drinkable while still being interesting,” explains Golden. The beer is brewed using small amounts of wheat and oats for body and smoothness with added Saphir and Jaryllo hops to impart a touch of fruit and floral character.
Everybody Wants Some is available at Alamo Drafthouses nationwide. Sold in 16 oz. cans, the 4.5 percent alcohol by volume beer pairs great with everything from popcorn to a burger and fries. The beer is in limited supply, so get to Alamo Drafthouse for a movie and beer date as soon as you can!
