Founders Brewing, the pride of Grand Rapids, Michigan, just announced the first beer release from its 2019 Mothership Series. The new beer is Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, a bourbon barrel aged stout with a thick, chewy body and notes of oak/wood and vanilla to complement its already complex bourbon character. This is the fifth beer release in the Mothership series and it will be offered as a Founders taproom- only exclusive starting on January 23, 2019.
Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki says this barrel- aged beauty is easily one of the most advanced beers Founders has ever offered.
“This is the biggest, boldest taproom Mothership Series release yet,” said Kosmicki. “We took what’s already a huge beer, Imperial Stout, and aged it in bourbon barrels for not one, but two years. The oak from the barrel complements the cocoa and licorice notes perfectly. This one should go quick!”
The Mothership Series is a taproom exclusive and ranks among the Founders brewing team’s favorite releases of the year. The exclusive nature is part of the appeal, but the fun only begins there. The Mothership series is also memorable to the brewing team because the releases represent experimental beers that encourage each team member to think far outside the box. Or, in other instances, the releases represent beers from the past resurrected for another, possibly final hurrah.
Barrel- Aged Imperial Stout contains 12.8 percent alcohol by volume and is bound to arose all five of your basic senses and perhaps uncover others you didn’t know even existed. Previous Mothership releases include such memorable beers as Panther Cub, MF Donkey Stout, Sleeper Cell, and Red’s Rye IPA. Each of these previous releases was amazing in its own way and Barrel- Aged Imperial Stout promises more of the same. If you live close to the Grand Rapids Founders taproom, make sure to carve out time from your busy schedule and head to the brewery on January 23 to sample this rare release. It’s bound to disappear in a short time so don’t procrastinate- get to the brewery on the release date and taste for yourself the incredible craftsmanship that has earned Founders Brewing so many high accolades from craft beer fans for so many years.
