Founders Brewing of Grand Rapids, Michigan has announced its first seasonal release leading up to the 2020 year and it’s a style of beer that is slowly catching on across the United States. The beer is Civilized Brut, a bubbly effervescent beer brewed in the style of a brut IPA.
Civilized Brut takes on characteristics one might expect, given its name. The beer is crisp, clear, and actively carbonated like a fine champagne. The bitterness level is dialed down a few notches and doesn’t overpower the senses, like is known to sometimes happen with beers of this style.
Founders head brewer Jeremy Kosmicki says this beer’s flavor is definitely hoppy, as brut IPA should be, but it maintains a level of dignity.
“Nothing says refreshment like a dry, sparkling, hop-forward IPA,” says Kosmicki. “Civilized Brut has just the right amount of bitterness and hop flavor to not overwhelm the clean and dry finish of this beer, while the high effervescence makes it feel like a party in every sip.”
Founders co- founder Dave Engbers says this new beer represents a new direction for Founders, a direction not taken by as many breweries, at least not yet.
“As the majority of brewers are introducing hazy, New England Style IPAs in the market, we have decided to take another road,” says Engbers. “Civilized Brut is a crystal-clear IPA that’s bursting with effervescence and elegant aromatics. Perfect for champagne and IPA aficionados alike.”
Founders Civilized Brut will be released first at the Grand Rapids and Detroit taprooms on October 30, 2019 before national shipments begin in November. The beer will be sold in six packs of 12 oz. cans, on draft, and in the immensely popular fifteen packs of 12 oz. cans. Look for it in the coming weeks in places where Founders beer is presently sold.
