Woof and Brew, the British company known for its dog tea bags, dog tonics, and herbal dog treats, has a new beverage certain to make your dog beg like never before while also improving the social bond you share with your four- legged companion.
Woof and Brew’s new product is beer. Yes, you heard that right- beer made for dogs. The brew is called Bottom Sniffer and it allows devoted dog owners an opportunity to pop a cold one and share a brew with man’s best friend without the health risks normally attributed to dogs from drinking beer due to adverse reactions from hops or intoxication from alcohol.
What exactly is Bottom Sniffer made from? According to the web site, the beer is produced using beer wort made with barley malt, water, acidifier lactic acid, seaweed extract, burdock, dandelion, flax, nettle, rooibos, and potassium sorbate. To add to the “sniff” appeal, the beer also includes natural chicken flavoring. Oh, and there is no alcohol at all- the wort isn’t fermented.
In other words, it has the qualities of real beer minus the hops and alcohol that could harm a dog’s health, plus a few added ingredients for doggie appeal.
I’ve had dogs for almost my entire life and I know that my pooches have shown an active interest in my open container of brew on more than one occasion. Sometimes, they have succeeded in snatching a quick sip, much to my displeasure- especially when that sip was from an expensive bottle of barrel aged porter or vintage barleywine. But sharing a beer with my dog is something I find appealing and like Steve Bennett, managing director at Woof and Brew says, the goal is to enhance human/dog bonding and companionship.
“There’s a huge move to more healthy products for dogs—in tandem with the human move to more healthy products,” said Bennett. “I think all of this is linked to the humanization of our pets, and ensuring that what we feed them is healthy, not just something we’ve designed for ourselves and hope is healthy for dogs.”
Bottom Sniffer is not the first beer made specifically for dogs. A doggie beer called Snuffle was introduced to the Netherlands in 2009. And in 2013, a brewery based in Oregon produced and distributed Dawg Grog, a non- alcoholic brew made with spent grains from the brewery along with other ingredients that dogs love.
Bottom Sniffer, as far as I know, is not yet available at retail stores in the United States. It may arrive here soon, but in the meantime, it can be purchased directly through www.bottomsniffer.com and shipped to the U.S. The cost is rather steep and the shipping will make it even more expensive, but isn’t the thought of knocking back a few brewskis with your pup worth the money? Check out Bottom Sniffer and improve your canine relationship in ways that only beer can accomplish.
