Craft beer fans love good beer and good times. We anticipate our next beer drinking moment the way a sports fanatic anticipates the next big game or the way a student of theater anticipates the next Broadway show. As beer fans, we also love when entertainment is part of the package and if there is something a little quirky, well, that enhances the experience even more. There is one such beer event taking place in select cities across the United States right now, and Great Beer Now was fortunate to have attended the event when it made its way to Houston this past weekend. It’s The Gold Lion Barbershop, an event that combines Modelo Negra beer, music, food, art, and hair styling in a single place.
Gold Lion Barbershop might sound a little off kilter and that is because it is a little off kilter. I have attended more beer festivals and beer- themed events over the course of my adult life than I can count, and this is most definitely the first one that added haircuts and hair styling to the scheduled activities. Food, music, and beer are expected, but haircuts? This truly makes the Gold Lion Barbershop one of a kind.
When the Gold Lion made its way to Houston on July 18- July 20, 2019, guests were treated to a heaping helping of food, haircuts, music, and art courtesy of:
- Daddy Duncan’s BBQ- Food items, including a vegetarian option
- Fat Cat Creamery- Specialty Ice Cream
- Cutthroat Barbers, Cutloose Hair- Haircuts and styles
- Anthenz Media, Seb Marmolejo, DJs Phon & Tony Styles- Musical entertainment
- Michael Murphy- Perceptual Art
The Gold Lion Barbershop is a pop- up of sorts and it maintains a certain level of exclusivity. The event is set up in a building someplace in the city, but it remains mostly inconspicuous. When I attended the event in Houston, Texas, I can remember walking toward the building and wondering what to expect. There are no windows to reveal what is inside and the outside is rather bland and not likely to attract anyone’s attention, but this is the whole idea. Modelo Negra wants the Gold Lion Barbershop to be a more exclusive experience. Those who take the time to find out where it is and purchase tickets will find the effort well worth it, as the Gold Lion Barbershop combines the look of a hair salon with contemporary art and a bar/lounge.

The Gold Lion Barbershop is an experience like few others. Each appearance features food, hair style, art, and music from local talent so each individual pop- up event will be slightly different from the others. Dallas and Houston, Texas have already hosted events and I know that Portland, Oregon is next. There are two other locations scheduled for late summer, so be sure to consult the Modelo USA Facebook page for more information as it becomes available and experience a barbershop like no other when the Gold Lion comes to town.
