Gordon Biersch Brewing Company WinterBock, a seasonal favorite in the Bay Area since the opening of the original Gordon Biersch restaurant in 1988, is now available in stores and on tap.
Bock beer has a rich history. Originating in Germany, bock was developed by eleventh century Bavarian monks as a form of sustenance during the Lenten season, providing “liquid” bread to consume during the period of fasting. In keeping with the ages old tradition, Gordon Biersch WinterBock is hearty and creamy. The classic dark, full-bodied double bock is brewed using five different types of malt: Munich malt, pilsner malt, black malt and two different caramel malts. The beer contains 7.5% alcohol by volume and has 26 IBU of bitterness.
Like all Gordon Biersch products, WinterBock is brewed in adherence to the “Reinheitsgebot,” the German purity law of 1516 which stipulates the use of only four ingredients – water, malt, hops and yeast.
“We take pride in continuing the ‘meal in a glass’ tradition that the monastery breweries began ten centuries ago when they figured out that a strong dark beer would fulfill their bread and water diet requirement – one of the greatest loopholes of all time.
