COVID may still be an obstacle to holding gatherings, but it didn’t stop the Great American Beer Festival from holding its annual award ceremony in Denver, Colorado.
This year’s awards ceremony took place without the actual festival itself. That makes 2021 the second year in a row that organizers decided to cancel the highly- attended public event for health reasons. And instead of taking place at the Colorado Convention center, it was held at an alternative location, the Bellco Theatre. It was the largest awards ceremony to date in terms of total entries.
A total of 2,192 breweries submitted 9,780 beers into the competition this year. There were 97 categories in which breweries competed for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. The category with the most entries was Juicy/Hazy IPA, with 427. And the winners were more widely distributed then usual, with the most awards to one brewery totaling just three, an honor bestowed upon Moontown Brewing in Whitestown, Indiana.
