Guinness, the world- famous stout with a history that dates back to 18th century Ireland, now has another American presence, this time in the Midwest. The new location is Guinness Open Gate Brewery Chicago, a state- of- the- art brewery located at 901 W. Kinzie, on Chicago’s west loop side.
What You Can Expect
Guinness Open Gate Brewery Chicago occupies a large, 15,000 square foot space that once housed a rail depot. The building contains a brewhouse, taproom, restaurant, and even a bakery, which is a first for the Guinness brand. There is a large private event space, too, perfect for celebrations and after- work gatherings.
With the beer, this newest Guinness location will, of course, serve the signature stout that made it famous. But there is much more. The tap list is divided into sections that include “Brewed in Dublin” and “Brewed in Chicago.” On the Dublin side, one will find classic Guinness Draught Stout, Guinness Extra Stout, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, and Guinness Zero. On the Chicago side, you will see unique and creative craft beers that will rotate throughout the year. Examples include Corn Maize Cream Ale, Kinzie Street Pale Ale, and Double the Haze, a tropical, hazy IPA.
Food and Views
If you’re thinking that Guinness Open Gate Brewery Chicago is a taproom and nothing more, think again! This is also a full-service restaurant featuring small plates such as Mussels, Fried Cheese Curds, Cobb Salad, and more. If your appetite requires greater taming, you can go for a large plate such as Guinness Beef Stew, Grilled Brat, Mushroom Pot Pie, etc. There is a weekend brunch menu, too. And a quick visit to the Guinness Bakery will uncover such delights as Banana Bread, Coconut Scone, Chocolate Croissant, etc. Assorted coffees, teas, and lattes are available to complete your morning meal.
Chicago is known for its chilly temperatures, but on those days when the weather is more favorable, a visit to the outdoor patio is ideal. It runs most of the length of the building and it’s the perfect place to mingle and enjoy the skyline views while sipping on a Guinness draught paired with a 1910 Burger or other menu item.
