Fall is the season for colorful foliage, cooler temperatures, and heavier clothing. It’s also a season for new beers and it is common for Oktoberfest and Pumpkin beers to make their annual appearances during these late months of the year. But nothing says an autumn brew has to correspond to any defined style- brewers are free to create any beer they like and promote it as a beer for the season. And that is exactly what has happened at Boston’s Harpoon Brewery as it releases a brand new fall seasonal, Flannel Friday.
Flannel is a popular clothing of choice in cooler climates and the sight of individuals clothed in flannel is a common sight in and around the Boston area as soon as the first cool morning debuts, usually in September. Flannel Friday pays tribute to this annual change of attire and it’s a welcome change from the traditional fall seasonal beers.
What can craft beer fans expect with Flannel Friday? This beer is classified as amber ale with a hoppy personality. The beer features a citrus/pine aroma from the addition of Cascade and Citra hops. The flavor is hoppy, as expected, but with a solid malt presence that balances out the contributions from the hops. Flannel Friday has an alcohol level of 5.7 percent by volume with 35 IBU of bitterness.
You might wonder if Harpoon Oktoberfest will still be available now that Flannel Friday is the new fall beer in town. Harpoon Brewery says it will still brew some of its popular Oktoberfest beer, but it will only be available in limited release in September and October, since Flannel Friday is intended to take its place.
Harpoon Flannel Friday is available right now in 6-pack and 12-pack bottles, 12-packs of cans, and on draft. To learn more about this deviation from the usual fall brew, visit www.harpoonbrewery.com.
