Climate change is a hot button item and many feel it’s an issue that requires immediate action. America’s craft beer industry knows the importance of a healthy planet and just recently, HenHouse Brewing Company decided to get in on the action, launching Vote for the Green New Deal, a beer brewed specifically to bring political attention to this important cause.
This beer is intended to encourage ordinary citizens to take action and to help facilitate its goal, each can contains contact information for elected representatives. The initial batch of 4- can packs is making its way to Sonoma, Napa, and Marin counties in California and the hope is that citizens will contact their rep and demand climate action.
Collin McDonnell, co- founder of HenHouse Brewing, says the consecutive years of extensive fires in the region is proof that something needs to be done, and quickly.
“California is experiencing the fourth consecutive fall marked by unbreathable air and rampant wildfires,” said McDonnell. “Vote for the Green New Deal will encourage our community to make their voices heard. We are asking breweries all over the country to pledge their platforms to push Congress to take climate action now.”
As McDonnell stated, this campaign isn’t limited only to HenHouse Brewing. Vote for the Green New Deal is a challenge to other breweries as well and it asks fellow craft breweries to create an IPA of their own, or use a suggested recipe, and attach the Vote for the Green New Deal label. Each brewery is then asked to donate a portion of sales proceeds to a climate change advocacy organization. HenHouse Brewing is partnering with the Climate Emergency Fund but there are countless other, worthwhile climate change causes.
Sarah Ezzy, board secretary of Climate Emergency Fund, says the HenHouse Brewing initiative is an important one that will hopefully compel others to get involved.
“The Climate Emergency Fund is thrilled to be joining forces with HenHouse Brewery for this campaign,” said Ezzy. “Collin and his team have seen firsthand the impacts of the climate emergency and they understand the importance of raising awareness and compelling the public to take action. Climate Emergency Fund will deploy 100% of funds raised by this campaign to climate activists on the front lines who are pushing for urgent action.”
Vote for the Green New Deal kicks off now and is planned to continue well into 2021. Whether you live in California or elsewhere, climate change is a national crisis and everyone is encouraged to get involved in any way possible.
“The climate emergency is here and everyone has an obligation to act,” says McDonnell.
Never thought about climate change affected this industry – thanks for sharing!
Yes, and that is what got the owners of this brewery to take this initiative. They want the public to know that climate change has wide- reaching impacts and we need to do what we can to curtail its effects.
What are great way to draw attention to how climate change is affecting the industry -thanks for sharing!
What a great article. I never really made a correlation between climate action and the beer industry.
