Kona Brewing is Hawaii’s number one mainland import and most every craft beer fan has at least tried Longboard Lager, Fire Walk Pale Ale, and possibly others. Some Kona Brewing beers are available only in limited release and in select markets, but Kona is set to release another beer nationwide. The beer is Lemongrass Luau, a beer tailor- made for the summer heat.
Lemongrass Luau has been sold in Hawaii for quite some time, quenching the thirsts of Hawaiians and tourists as they seek out refreshment and relief from high temperatures. The beer is part of Kona Brewing’s Aloha series- a special series of beers made for specific seasons and brewed using island/tropically inspired ingredients.
Kona Brewing’s head of operations Sandi Shriver says Lemongrass Luau taps into the increased vitality felt by beer lovers when the temperatures tick higher.
“There’s an unmistakable energy when the weather changes and people swap long sleeves for tank tops,” said Shriver. “We wanted to bottle that seasonal excitement in a blonde ale that really captures the ready-to-celebrate vibe of spring with an invigorating pop of flavor and a nice smooth finish.”
Luaus are one of the defining events in Hawaii and something many tourists try to attend when they visit. The word “luau” simply means party or feast and Lemongrass Luau is made with parties in mind. It’s a highly sessionable beer intended to keep the party going well into the night, with the zing and refreshment of lemongrass and fresh ginger. The beer is brewed using a unique hop combination that adds earthy notes to a beer that tends toward the sweet side, but that doesn’t swing too far in any direction.
Lemongrass Luau contains 5 percent alcohol by volume and has 20 IBU of bitterness. Besides parties, it also matches very well with grilled fish, chicken, pork and vegetables. To find Lemongrass Luau at a location near you, visit Kona Brewing Co.’s Beer Finder at konabrewingco.com/find-beer.
