Advertised and promoted as the “Super Premium” product in the Anheuser- Busch lineup, Michelob is a beer that offers a little more character, a little more body, and a little more taste that most of the other Anheuser- Busch malt beverage products. It’s a beer with a little more to offer, even though it is still a typical mass- produced American style lager.
So how does Michelob measure up? Well, starting with its appearance, you can tell this beer is going to have more to offer than most other Anheuser- Busch products. It is slightly darker in color than Budweiser and a good pour does result in a decent amount of foam. The head of foam lasts longer than it does with other mass- produced lagers and the nose of Michelob, while certainly nothing special, is one of sweet malt and bread.
Tasting Michelob reveals a taste that is just about in line with expectations. It does offer slightly more flavor than other macro- brewed beers with sweet, grainy malts tasted up front, followed by mildly grassy hops in the finish. Michelob uses rice as one of its main ingredients, just like other Anheuser- Busch products, but there is a slightly greater malt to rice ratio in Michelob, and this leads to a slightly fuller taste.
Lighter lagers are still the best selling among beer products sold in the United States and Michelob certainly fits the definition of a lighter American lager. However, Michelob does offer a little fuller body and a slightly richer taste than other mass- produced beer products and it has enough good qualities to earn it a recommendation. It can’t compare to some of the superior craft- brewed beers on the market but for a beer produced in volume and intended to appeal to a large segment of the population, Michelob isn’t half bad.

Michelob was big back in the late 70s and early 80s. I remember my dad drinking it once in a while. I still consider it to be A-B’s premium brand, but I noticed it’s priced a lot cheaper than Bud products. That makes it a win win…..it’s AB’s premium brand, but at Busch Light prices. Sounds good to me!
