Milford, a coastal city in Connecticut located between Bridgeport and New Haven, is about to have a craft brewery all its own as Milford Point Brewing inches closer to its opening day, set for April 7, 2018. The new brewery is located at 230 Woodmont Road and will be the first brewery in Milford.
Milford Point co- owners Jerry Candido and Chrs Willett say the addition of a brewery in Milford will be great for those who love craft beer and who love the idea of having a hometown brewery to call their own.
“We’re giving folks in Milford and the surrounding communities a great-tasting, homegrown craft beer option,” said Candido.
Willett, a homebrewer, met Candido seven years ago, the result of both men’s daughters playing on the same softball team. Willett offered Candido some of his homebrew to try, and his new friend was quickly converted. Willett says his foray into homebrewing and entrance in homebrewing contests, along with positive feedback, convinced him to turn his hobby into a full time gig.
“I have really always liked craft beers,” said Willett. “After a while, I figured it was worth trying to make my own craft beer. It just so happens that the beer I was brewing was good, at least in my opinion, and my family and friends thought so, too.”
Milford Point Brewing will begin with a lineup of diverse beers with names that tie- in with the local area. Silver Sands IPA, Devon Wheat, Pond Point Lager, and West Shore Double IPA will kick off operations and Willett says it’s important that the names of the beers reflect the community in which they will be served.
“We want to ensure the names of all of our beers have the homegrown feel that our neighbors deserve from Milford’s first-to-open craft brewery,” said Willett.
Milford Point Brewing will feature a tasting room where guests can sample beers and purchase growlers of beer to go. The new business will distribute kegs of beer to bars. Cans and/or bottles may arrive at some point in the future, but it’s draft- only for the time being. There are actually two other Milford area breweries in the planning stages right now: Tribus Beer Co. and Dockside Brewery but Milford Point Brewing is first out of the gate. Candido says the growth in the local beer scene is reflective of the craft beer industry’s influence across Connecticut.
“Across our state, the craft beer industry is growing,” said Candido. “It’s creating jobs, revitalizing run-down properties, and generating over $700 million in economic impact annually. That’s why we strongly believe that bringing craft breweries into the city and giving residents a variety of options for great-tasting craft beer while creating jobs, is a win-win for Milford.”
Milford Point Brewing will be open Thursday through Saturday to start, with 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm hours on Thursday and Friday and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm hours on Saturday. For more information on Milford Point Brewing, visit the brewery’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/milfordpointbrewing/.
Thanks for sharing this! I love local breweries and it was cool to see their backstory! Next time we are in the area we will check them out.
It’s brand new and the verdict is still out on them, but from reading about Milford Point and their dedication to the craft beer cause, it sounds like a place worthy of visiting.
I used to live in Greenwich so when you say Bridgeport and New Haven, ALL SORTS of memories come to mind… However, none of them include BEER or ALCOHOL because well, I was a lot younger back then. I do recall sipping my dad’s Heineken a bunch when I was a kid, cause um, apple juice? lol
Being younger is part of the reason you didn’t hear much about beer, but it’s also because in the past, there was little beer to be had. But times have changed in Connecticut and elsewhere- most every medium size city or larger has at least one brewery and often many more.
I love craft beer! Now I’ll have to make the trip to Milford to check this out 🙂
If you live nearby, Milford Point Brewing sounds like its worth the trip!
