The National Restaurant Association (NRA) announces one of six regional qualifying locations for the 2nd Annual Star of the Bar will be in conjunction with The 2016 New England Food Show in Boston for the first time this March.
Bartenders are tasked with creating a cocktail featuring Jägermeister, exclusively imported and distributed in the U.S. by Star of the Bar sponsor Sidney Frank Importing Company, the number one selling imported liqueur in the U.S. and one of the leading brands in the world.
The first round of the competition takes place at Empire (One Marina Park Drive) on Sunday, March 13 from 6:00–8:00 p.m., where bartenders will mix cocktails at the official after-party of The 2016 New England Food Show hosted by the NRA Show and the Massachusetts Restaurant Association (MRA). The three winners go on to the next round on the show floor of The New England Food Show the following day, Monday, March 14 at 4:00 p.m.
The finalist from Boston is selected during a two-hour live competition judged by a panel of three industry experts including a media guest, a Jägermeister representative, and a United States Bartenders’ Guild member. Cocktails are evaluated based on flavor, originality, presentation, and creative use of Jägermeister. Additionally, judging is based on the following criteria: 25 percent technical skills, 50 percent taste, and 25 percent sales appeal.
In addition to the Boston winner, finalists from Chicago, New York, San Francisco, San Diego, and Charleston, will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Chicago to compete in the finals on May 22 at BAR (Beverage Alcohol for Restaurants) at the 2016 National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show, for the chance to win a $5,000 prize and the coveted title of “Star of the Bar 2016.”
To enter, contestants can fill out an online submission form either ahead of the live qualifying event, or in-person on-site. Winners will be declared at the conclusion of each qualifying event.
In addition to the regional Star of the Bar competition, The 2016 New England Food Show will host expanded alcohol offerings featuring seven booths centered on the wine & spirits industries, including such vendors as August A Busch & Co., BuzzBar, Harpoon Brewery, Serralles USA, SmartBrew, St. Kilian Importing, and Stirrings.
