San Diego’s The Original 40 Brewing Company is set to release a new limited- edition beer, one that is certain to satisfy lovers of decadent, barrel aged brew. The new beer is called Rafiki’s Ritual, a big, strong, complex beer that tantalizes from the beginning and continues to satisfy to the final sip.
Bring on the Flavor
Original 40 brewing has given Rafiki’s Ritual plenty of time to mature. It was aged in bourbon barrels for 30 months and is brewed at over 40 plato. With conditions like that, you just know the result is going to be strong. And strong it is, weighing in at 12 percent alcohol by volume.
Several added ingredients, common to many barrel aged beers, contributing to the complex personality of this brew. Original 40 added Madagascar vanilla beans and three types of cocoa to the mix and the result is like artwork in a glass. Flavors like vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate are expected. But examine more closely and you will discover other, often subtler tastes such as caramel, shortbread, crème Brule, marshmallow, brown sugar, and coffee. Each sip returns something new and craft beer fanatics will have a great time tasting and discerning the different flavors.
Rafiki’s Ritual is brewed as an Imperial stout and was crafted by award- winning brewer Cosimo Sorrentino. Sadly for Original 40 Brewing, this will be Sorrentino’s last contribution to the brewery. He is relocating to Texas on May 7. Rafiki’s Ritual will be released on that day and, in Sorrentino’s honor, each bottle will include his signature.
