Oskar Blues Brewery, the forward- thinking brewing operation that reacquainted the craft beer world to the wonders of metal packaging, is about to celebrate an anniversary of sorts as its expansion brewery in Austin, Texas celebrates one year in business.
The Oskar Blues Austin facility is much more than just a brewery. I was there back when they opened and I can recall the uniqueness of the building; namely, the emphasis on live music and performances. As most people know, music is a major component of the Austin, Texas culture and the folks at Oskar Blues felt it was important to incorporate this into the new facility. They thus added a music hall and invite local and regional performers to take the stage while customers sip away on their Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale, Mama’s Little Yella Pils, or other craft beer.
Austin will celebrate the one year anniversary on September 16 and 17 with live music, brewery tours, and a taste of specialty beers. The fun begins on Saturday, September 16 at 4pm and on this first day of fun, guests can expect the following:
- 4:20pm – Specialty beer tappings, music supplied by live DJ
- 7pm – Live tunes supplied by Austin-based talents such as the Halfways, Abram Shook & Austin favorites, and The Bright Light Social Hour
- Fine Southern Gentlemen will grace the brewery with their presence, exposing everyone to their amazing live screen printing
- Fever Dream will provide hands-on, interactive multi-media projection art
For the second day of celebration, Sunday, September 17, Oskar Blues is opening the facility for a free community day, starting at 10 a.m. The entire family is invited to tag along and take part in the following:
- The CAN’d Aid Foundation, Oskar Blues own charitable organization, will host a morning community bike build. Attendees at the event will help assemble 88 new bikes to donate to second graders at Austin’s Cook Elementary School
- CAN’d Aid Foundation & Black Fret musicians will host an afternoon music workshop + instrument donation
- Live music will fill the air, with Black Fret musicians & Americana Sunday programming
- More specialty beer tappings and brewery tours
- Food trucks will be onsite plus there will be local vendor market
Michael Harris, Oskar Blues Austin Head Brewer, is proud of the brewery’s first year in operation and he says the decision to open a second Oskar Blues brewery in Austin, Texas was the absolute right thing to do.
“The city of Austin has been an ideal fit for Oskar Blues – from its tight-knit and supportive community and rebellious nature, to the live music scene and its passion for homegrown craft beer,” said Harris. “We’re damn proud to call Austin home.”
General admission tickets for Saturday are available here for $25, or at the door for $28. Sunday, as mentioned before, requires no admission charge.
A brewery turns one year of age only once and Oskar Blues Austin is prepared to celebrate in style, with music, beer, art, and a day dedicated to community building efforts. Pay a visit if you can, and help commemorate a full year of Oskar Blues beer in Austin, Texas.
