Oskar Blues Brewery keeps the innovation coming this year, releasing beer after beer in a wide range of categories. Most recently, the Colorado- based brewery has decided to wade into the pool of low-calorie options with its latest release, One-y 100 Calorie Hazy IPA.
As most people know, hazy IPA beers are not normally known as a waistline- friendly beverage so creating a hazy IPA that is lower in calories while still delivering on taste is certainly a challenge. It takes special skill to produce a reduced calorie beer that isn’t weak and watery and Oskar Blues Pilot Brewery Head Brewer Juice Drapeau knows from experience that it requires one very important ingredient.
“We put a ton of hops into the beer, which provide aromatic, flavorful oils and contribute to the mouthfeel,” says Drapeau. “The aroma hits you first. There are notes of citrus, honeysuckle, peach and mango. The beer is fruity with a hop haze and a nice biscuit flavor to the malt. The use of pale ale malt and wheat, along with the hefty dry hop load, creates a medium body. It’s easy to drink – pairs well with breakfast, lunch, or dinner,” he added.
One-y is dry-hopped with El Dorado, Comet and Citra hops, and Mosaic and French Aramis appear in the whirlpool. These big hop flavors keep the great taste coming while adding only a small quantity to the final calorie count.
Oskar Blues One-y Hazy IPA contains 4 percent alcohol by volume and only 100 calories per 12 oz. serving. It will be available in 6 packs and 12 packs of 12 oz. cans and will be distributed nationwide. It takes skill to brew a flavorful, low calorie session hazy IPA but Oskar Blues certainly has the expertise to pull off the seemingly impossible. Grab a sixer or 12 pack and see for yourself how tasty a low calorie hazy IPA can be.
