Oskar Blues Brewery keeps churning out new beer, month after month, year after year. The latest beer from the Colorado- based brewery is a collaboration effort, an India Pale Ale named SCIPA, which stands for String Cheese Incident India Pale Ale, minus one of the “I” letters in the name.
With a name like that, you might initially think this beer has something to do with cheese, but the name is actually taken from a Colorado Jam band known as The String Cheese Incident. It celebrates the band’s 25 anniversary tour and will be available at select String Cheese Incident tour locations.
Oskar Blues Brewery has musical roots so a collaboration with a musical act isn’t far fetched in any way. But the common bonds don’t end there. It just so happens that The String Cheese Incident’s keyboardist, Kyle Hollingsworth, is an accomplished homebrewer. He, along with fellow band members Jason Hann and Keith Moseley, worked with Oskar Blues head brewer Juice Drapeau to formulate SCIPA, a brut IPA that is crisp, dry hopped, and quite drinkable.
Drapeau says it was fun working with the band, especially Hollingsworth, because he already understands the craft.
“It was great working with Kyle to dial this in because he has so much brewing knowledge,” said Drapeau. “It was a true collaboration.”
SCIPA is brewed using Mosaic, Enigma, Simcoe, Citra, and Strata hops along with Root Shoot Pale Genie Malt straight from Loveland, Colorado as well as German Pilsner Malt, Vienna Malt, and toasted flaked rice. The final result is one that Hollingsworth feels will match up perfectly with an evening of live music.
“I wanted something in a progressive style that was crisp and not too sweet – something for pouring and enjoying at amphitheaters, music festivals and camping,” explained Hollingsworth.
SCIPA will be sold at Oskar Blues taprooms on draft and in four packs of 16 oz. cans. As mentioned previously, it will also be available at some of The String Cheese Incident’s live shows.
