Oskar Blue is about to make something good even better as it expands 12- packs of its popular Pinner Throwback IPA by adding 4 additional cans. This will make it the only 16- pack in the world of craft beer and its upcoming release in Colorado will take place right in time for the holidays with national distribution to follow in 2017.
Pinner Throwback IPA was a big hit with craft beer fans when it was launched in 2015, quickly climbing the charts to become Oskar Blues 2nd best- selling brand, right after Dale’s Pale Ale. Pinner was added to the Oskar Blues CANundrum mix 12- pack, which contains three cans each of Pinner Throwback IPA, Dale’s Pale Ale, Mama’s Little Yella Pils, and Oskar Blues IPA, in February of 2016. Throwback’s popularity warranted its own packaging and the new 16 pack configuration is a nod to the brand’s enthusiastic fans, who cannot seem to throw back enough of this highly sessionable beer.
Pinner Throwback IPA is focused on hop flavors. The beer is dry- hopped and is known for its tropical taste and stone fruit character. Over the summer of 2016, Oskar Blues ramped up the hops responsible for the fruity notes of the beer, resulting in a new product, Passion Fruit Pinner. This new version of Pinner is set to return from May through August 2017.
Oskar Blues head brewer Tim Matthews says the varying flavors of fruit, as well as a significant contribution from the malts, help explain Pinner’s popularity with the craft beer crowd.
“Many things contribute to flavor in beer, and with Pinner it’s a focus on hops and malt–with a considerable nod to the hops,” said Matthews. “With the lower ABV, layers of flavor build on one another– with one sip citrus, the next sip pineapple, next sip papaya, next sip passion fruit, next sip toasted bread–and then on to the next pint.”
Pinner Throwback IPA is the first craft beer sold in 16 packs and its 4.9 percent alcohol by volume and reasonable 35 IBU of bitterness make it a modest IPA, easygoing and friendly to most palates.
