Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, the off- centered brewing operation known for its eccentric beers, has welcomed a new member to the family. The new beer is Lupu- Luau IPA, an India Pale Ale brewed with toasted coconut, experimental hops, and dehydrated coconut water. Dogfish Head founder and CEO Sam Calagione says this new beer is the result of dedication and innovation.
“We worked hard to secure the majority of the full domestic yield of this experimental hop crop for years to come and Dogfish is currently the only brewery contracted to purchase it,” says Calagione. “We use dehydrated coconut water that contains delicious natural sugars and flaked toasted coconut as centerpieces of the beer – ingredients that pay homage to Coco Loco, a coconut blonde brewpub exclusive we brewed back in 2011 and an early example of tropical fruit IPA innovation from Dogfish.”
Every craft beer fan is aware that India Pale Ale is the most popular style of craft beer in the United States, but most are not aware of the explosive growth in the fruit IPA variation. According to the Brewers Association, fruit IPA grew at a 236.67% rate during the rolling 52- week period ending in May, 2017 and that further growth is expected. Many are also not aware that Dogfish Head helped popularize this sub- style with its Aprihop, a fruit- enhanced IPA originally released all the way back in 1996. Dogfish Head Brewery was thus the first American brewery to package and ship a fruit IPA nationwide.
Lupu- Luau IPA takes its name from Lupulin, a gland in the hop flower that contains essential oils, and luau because it emphasizes the party spirit that is a driving force behind this beer and its tropical fruit flavors. The beer contains 7.3 percent alcohol by volume, 45 IBUs, and is available right now in places where Dogfish Head beer is presently sold.
