Quincy, Massachusetts, the Boston suburb known for its historical significance as the birthplace of two American presidents, is about to show its penchant for modernity with the opening of a vegan beer hall, the first such establishment in the United States.
The new eatery and bar is called Rewild Plant Food & Drink and it will offer a wide selection of local craft beer, coffee, wine, and other beverages along with pizza, tacos, assorted sandwiches and more. Each and every item will be plant- based, eliminating any guesswork for those of the vegan persuasion. Rewild co- founder Pat McAuley says one of the goals of the new restaurant is to introduce vegan foods to those who wouldn’t otherwise bother to try them; namely those who erroneously believe that vegan food is bland and boring.
“I used to be one of those people, so I get it,” said McAuley. “I was so wrong. You only gain more tastes, textures, and experiences when you venture into plant-based foods. Most people spend their entire lives eating in the very small category of animal foods. When you open your eyes to the thousands and thousands of plant-based options out there, your tastes are overwhelmed with new flavors.”
Besides winning over new adherents to vegan food, Rewild will provide those who are presently vegan with a comfortable atmosphere where they can feel free to eat as they please without the still common social costs.
“It’s important to give people the opportunity to eat better for themselves and the planet while still being able to have fun,” said McAuley, “by making it an approachable experience, we hope to dispel any stigmas associated with plant-based food. People need to know that they can make better food decisions without sacrificing taste or having a good time. They can still be regular people!”
With the beer, guests can bask in a 4,200 square foot beer hall, complete with 120 seats, a large stage, and a modern atmosphere. The initial plan calls for 24 taps of beer with a special emphasis on local, Boston brewed suds. Again, the beer will be limited only to those produced entirely with plants and nothing else.
McAuley says the acceptance of veganism is growing for several reasons and it certainly doesn’t hurt when popular, local athletes like Tom Brady and Zdeno Charaeat adopt the vegan diet.
“I’m a regular guy who loves the Patriots and likes a burger with my beer,” said McAuley. “Now, I just have an Impossible Burger or Beyond Burger, instead. If you can have food that tastes just as good (I’d argue better) and it’s better for you and the planet, why wouldn’t you?”, McAuley added.
Rewild plans to open soon and will be located at 1546 Hancock St. in Quincy, Massachusetts. To keep up with the restaurant’s progress, check online at the beer hall’s website or follow on Facebook.
