What do you think about when you see a rainbow? We know that rainbows are the result when water droplets are struck by light and the resulting refraction, dispersion, and reflection that naturally occurs. But rainbows are also mythical and have inspired awe and wonder when they magically appear following a bout of rainfall. The allure of these multi- colored, curved bands in the sky inspired a new beer: Rainbows are Real, a hazy IPA brewed by Clown Shoes Beer.

Therapeutic Brew
Clown Shoes Rainbows are Real isn’t the first beer to wear the hazy IPA label, but it can claim one important distinction. It is the first ever beer brewed with added terpenes. These are aromatic oils found in natural sources such as cannabis and hops and they supposedly offer therapeutic benefits. The specific terpenes present in Rainbows are Real include Linalool, which supposedly promotes a feeling of relaxation and Beta- Pinene, which is used to alleviate pain, anxiety, and inflammation.
Besides the terpenes, Rainbows are Real is brewed using pale two -row, golden promise, wheat, oat, and honey malts. Hops include Azacca, Citra, and Mosaic. The alcohol content of this beer is 6.75 percent by volume.
Like a Rainbow
Rainbows are Real is a beautiful beer. Its colorful packaging, added terpenes, fragrant aroma, and juicy flavor characteristics are a treat for the senses and they place you in a happy, content state of mind.
Starting with the aroma, Rainbows are Real exposes its friendly welcoming, personality. The scent of pine, citrus, and floral notes fill your lungs with happiness and the golden body speaks to your soul. This hazy IPA isn’t as milky in appearance or mouthfeel as some other juicy IPA. It is less opaque than many of its peers but still takes on the hazy appearance one would expect in this style.
Most important with any beer is the flavor and Rainbows are Real scores high marks in this area. The use of wheat and oats adds a touch of grain and a slight silkiness to the body of the beer while the Azacca, Mosaic, and Citra hops pile on the layers of juicy citrus, pine, and tropical fruits. I found the flavor quite pleasing overall and took my time finishing my 16 oz. serving. I sipped the beer slowly, savoring every drop.
I can’t comment on the therapeutic abilities of the added Beta Pinene and Linalool, but I can say with confidence that Rainbows are Real is a delicious hazy IPA that is all but certain to be a hit with fans of the style. Its juicy flavors, cool packaging artwork, and other qualities make this beer that truly shines.
