Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing, the oldest craft brewery in the state, is buzzing over its latest brew and it’s counting on the craft beer loving public to do the same.
The new beer from Saint Arnold is Icon Gold, the latest entry in the Icon series. This newest beer from the good guys and gals at Saint Arnold is a Honey Saison brewed using Texas Wildflower Honey from Burleson’s Honey, located in Waxahachie, Texas. These busy bees supplied 800 pounds of honey for use in each batch of this newest Icon brew and Saint Arnold brewer Colin Klingemann says that Burleson’s Texas roots were an important factor in selecting this honey over others.
“We learned that the United States produces more than 300 varietals of honey, and we wanted to feature a flavor profile that only Texas honey can offer,” said Klingemann. “Using locally sourced ingredients is part of the tradition of brewing the Saison style, so connecting with our friends at Burleson’s Honey was natural.”
Burleson’s Honey is a family business that goes back five generations. The company was founded in 1907 and has grown increasingly popular during recent years as consumers continue to seek out natural foods. Burleson Honey VP Tim Burleson is proud of his company’s commitment to healthfulness and is humbled to be chosen by Saint Arnold to supply one of this beer’s main ingredients.
“With the ever growing consumer movement to more natural ingredients in food and the avoidance of artificial sweeteners, this is the golden age for honey,” said Burleson. “We work with some of the finest Texas honey producers and beekeepers in the Lone Star State to craft Burleson’s Texas Wildflower Honey, so being selected as a featured ingredient in a great craft beer like Saint Arnold Icon Gold – Honey Saison is a very special honor.”
Saint Arnold Honey Saison Icon Gold is a bright, golden ale with aromas of honey, flowers, and nectarines. It features the flavor of French Saison yeast and pilsner, wheat, and CaraPils malts. Balancing out the brew are Perle Lemon Drop and Moteka hops. The beer has an alcohol level of 6.4 percent and a bitterness rating of only 22 IBU, so it definitely leans toward the sweeter side.
Honey Saison is being rolled out this week, both on draft and in 12 oz. bottles. It will gradually replace Saint Arnold Icon Green as supplies are depleted.
