Making the move from glass to metal is a common transition at craft breweries these days. Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing, the oldest craft brewery in the state, has been gradually changing its packaging and now plans to offer canned versions of two more of its year- round beers: Saint Arnold Weedwacker and Saint Arnold Endeavor Double IPA.
Saint Arnold Brewing first made the changeover to aluminum cans in early 2015, packaging its popular Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower and Santo in 12 oz. cans for the first time. Later in 2015, Saint Arnold released two new beers, Art Car IPA and 5 O’Clock Pils but rather than offer these new beers in bottles, the decision was made to package both exclusively in cans. The success of these canned beers has convinced Saint Arnold brewer/founder Brock Wagner to embrace the concept whole- heartedly.
“There are a lot of things to like about cans – they are easy to carry to the beach and the pool, won’t break, they protect beer from light and are easy to recycle,” said Wagner. “I have to admit that I used to be among those who viewed craft beer in cans with some skepticism, but the level of community acceptance and enthusiasm for cans has made a believer out of me.”
Sales of the canned versions of Saint Arnold beers have increased dramatically in the past six months, jumping 110 percent. Cans now account for about one- third of Saint Arnold’s total packaged beer sales and there is no reason to expect the popularity of cans will fade. Fans of Saint Arnold Oktoberfest fall seasonal will be pleased to learn that it, too, will be packaged in cans, distributed to Texas, Louisiana, and Florida markets starting this month.
Saint Arnold Weedwacker and Saint Arnold Endeavor can both be purchased in cans and bottles, but the 12 oz. bottles are going to be phased out, replaced entirely with cans. Endeavor will continue to be available in 22 oz. bomber bottles, but the 12 oz. bottled version of these two beers will become relics of history as the move to metal continues.
