Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing continued its winning ways at this year’s Great American Beer Festival, in Denver, Colorado, winning a Silver and Bronze medal and increasing its total Great American Beer Festival medal count to 26. This is the most of any southern brewery and one of the highest lifetime totals for any American craft brewing operation.
Amber Ale, a beer that dates all the way back to 1994, took home the bronze medal in the Ordinary/Special Bitter category. Amber Ale is a Saint Arnold fan favorite due to its malty, caramel body and extremely agreeable flavor profile. A Silver Medal was awarded to Saint Arnold Oktoberfest in the Scottish Ale category. Sweet and malty, Saint Arnold Oktoberfest, introduced in 1997, is brewed differently from a traditional Marzen beer, hence the award recognition as a Scottish Ale rather than an Oktoberfest/Marzen brew.
The Great American Beer Festival medals were the fourth for each of these long- lived and still highly enjoyable beers. Saint Arnold Owner/Founder Brock Wagner says the recognition is a testament to these two beer’s remarkability and staying power.
“Amber Ale and Oktoberfest were delicious 20 years ago and they are delicious now,” said Wagner. “I plan on having one of each in celebration today.”
The 2018 Great American Beer Festival was the most competitive yet, with nearly 8,500 beers submitted for judging. Saint Arnold was the only Houston area brewery to win a medal and was one of 15 different Texas breweries to win at least one medal this year. In total, Texas breweries took home 18 Great American Beer Festival medals: 6 Gold, 4 Silver, and 8 Bronze.
Congratulations to the good guys and gals at Saint Arnold Brewing for adding two additional awards to the brewery’s bulging trophy case!
That’s great!! It’d be fun to do a national tour of the top breweries and brews! Like a food truck rally trailing to the biggest brew cities! I bet texan beer has different themes than Detroit!
Yes, every brewery is unique and the breweries in different parts of the United States each have personalities all their own. I like your idea of a food truck rally across the USA, stopping at some of the top breweries- I’m surprised no one has thought of that yet!
