Schlafly Beer, the largest and best- known independent brewery in the St. Louis, Missouri area, just recently announced the latest beer release from its popular Ibex Cellar Series. The beer is Barrel- Aged Barleywine, an English style ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels. This is the sixth release in this series and it follows the release of such memorable beers as Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, Imperial Coffee Stout, Local Oak, Sour Blonde, and Barrel- Aged Saison.
Schlafly founding brewer Stephen Hale says this 10.2 percent alcohol by volume barrel- aged gem combines the best of barrel aging with that of strong English ale for an unforgettable taste experience.
“You get the unmistakable flavor of a Kentucky bourbon with the heft of a British strong ale,” said Hale. “The Bourbon barrels impart oak, vanilla and, of course, whiskey flavors to the considerable malt strength of a barleywine. Keep a stiff upper lip!”, Hale added.
Barleywine is far from being a new style at Schlafly. The brewery has, in fact, been brewing barleywine for more than two decades.
“Barleywine has been in the brewery’s portfolio since the early 1990’s, and it has been a favorite ever since. It heralded the coming of winter when strong beers were the norm to stave off the ensuing cold weather,” says Hale.
From the Ibex Cellar beers feature big, bold brews produced and packaged in smaller bottles that pay homage to the Ibex, as indicated by the symbol on each bottle. This latest addition to the Ibex family, Barrel- Aged Barleywine, will be available across the Schlafly distribution area while supplies last and will be sold in four- packs with a suggested retail price of $17.99.
