Lagers are rising in craft beer circles. Ales have dominated for many different reasons, but as the craft beer industry evolves, there has been a move toward brewing more lagers. This is especially the case with the older more established craft breweries, like Schlafly Beer, a St. Louis original. Schlafly is keeping the trend toward bottom- fermentation alive with the release of Lager Fusion, a sampler pack that features four lager beers.
Back to Basics
Lagers are still the most popular beer style in the world, but they have not caught on with craft breweries, at least not until lately. They are a classic, historic style and Lager Fusion is an excellent way to get back in touch with lager brews. The four featured beers are highly approachable and much more flavorful than the typical mass- produced lager on the market.
Schlafly CEO Fran Caradonna says this 12 pack sampler is a great way to get acquainted with crafted lagers while also cross- examining the differences that different fruit additions make.
“Our Lager Fusion pack encourages exploration,” says Caradonna. “Lagers are an introductory style to many consumers who may just be discovering craft beer, and we feel that our Lager Fusion pack offers a fun, approachable sampler that encourages trial. White Lager is a nuanced version of the overall category that lends itself well to fruit so it also appeals to the seasoned craft beer drinker who can try the base of White Lager and discover what each fruit lends to the beer.”
Give Me Four
Lager Fusion is comprised of four different lager beers. One is the familiar Schlafly White Lager mentioned above, a beer that has been around for a while. The other three lagers are fruited variations of the White Lager. The four beers are consistent not only with the base ingredients, but also with their alcohol content. Each of the four offerings contains 5.5 percent alcohol by volume.
Here is a quick snapshot of each beer:
- White Lager: Schlalfy’s White Lager is an unfiltered take on the approachable style. By retaining its yeast, White Lager delivers a hazy hue, hint of orange zest, and silky finish. White Lager is Schlafly’s take on a German zwickelbier, a style that dates back to the Middle Ages, when beer was matured in deep vaults (“lagered”) for months before emerging smooth and rich in vitamins. Because it’s unfiltered, it’s noticeably fresh with a slight tartness and sweetness.
- Cranberry Lager: The addition of cranberries to the traditional German lager brings a crisp tartness to the beer. The real fruit content adds a slight reddish hue to the final product.
- Lime Lager: The lime has long been a fruit that finds itself alongside a crisp lager. Most every beer lover is familiar with limes being used as a garnish for specific, popular brands. Schlafly’s Lime Lager is easily a notch better. It takes the fresh squeeze of a lime wedge and integrates it directly into the beer. There’s a subtle tartness from the lime that adds an extra layer of refreshment to the light, crisp lager.
- Tangerine Lager: This fruited lager stays true to the smooth, clean and straightforward style that you’ve grown to love but with a tangerine twist. The juicy orange citrus makes this the closest thing to a beermosa without the O.J.
