Schlafly Beer, one of the oldest and largest craft breweries in the state of Missouri, announced the beers to be included in this year’s Stout Bout, a 12- pack sampler of winter brews, along with the return of Zwicklebier, a White Lager. The 2016 Stout Bout features three brand new beers: Vanilla Milk Stout, Mexican-style Chocolate Stout and Toasted Coconut Stout. Schlafly will also include Coffee Stout, a longtime favorite, in the sampler pack. The new beers and the White Lager were all part of Schlafly’s Small Brews program, a brewing initiative that encourages experimentation and one that Schlafly brewer Stephen Hale says has been responsible for some of the brewery’s most successful creations.
“Through our Small Brews program, we experiment with a recipe and try out different variations until we feel that we have a winner. We then test the beers out on our consumers either in our brewpubs or at our signature events. For example, White Lager first debuted at our HOP in the City Festival, whereas these stouts were part of a tasting sampler at our Stout & Oyster Festival in March. Great feedback cues the potential for a larger market roll-out”, explains Hale.
Here is what craft beer fans can expect with the Stout Bout releases:
Schlafly Vanilla Milk Stout (5.2% ABV / 25 IBUs), is smooth and creamy with pronounced flavors of vanilla. The beer is aged on real vanilla beans for authentic taste and its balanced sweetness is only slightly bitter and hoppy.
Schlafly Toasted Coconut Stout (5.7% ABV / 30 IBUs) is made for coconut lovers. The aroma and taste of this beer both capture the contributions from the coconut, which is added directly to the beer as part of the brewing process, for a natural taste.
Schlafly Mexican Chocolate Stout (6.2% ABV / 25 IBUs) is exactly what its name suggests- a spicy, chocolaty beer, perfect for cold weather. The combination of cocoa and cinnamon flavors match well with a cool evening by the fire.
Schlafly Coffee Stout (5.7% ABV / 30 IBUs) is a fan favorite for the ages. The beer is brewed using coffee from local St. Louis roaster, Kaldi’s Coffee, and it marries the flavors of traditional English stout with that of premium French roast coffee for a delectable treat.
Schlafly White lager, sold in its own six packs, is a German-style Zwicklebier with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Golden in color with an obvious haziness, White Lager is a thirst- quenching beer with wheat and fruity character. Easy- drinking in nature, this Zwicklebier weighs in at a modest 5.5 percent alcohol by volume and contains only 25 IBUs of bitterness, making it far more palatable then the typical winter seasonal.
