Women have made great strides in craft beer. Once dominated by men, both in brewery operations and in the consumer realm, craft beer is turning the gender corner, with more ladies running all facets of brewery operations than at any point in recent memory. These lasses of lager not only brew the beer, they serve in every position at the brewery, up to and including ownership. Nowhere is this more perfectly illustrated than at Shine Brewing, a Boulder Colorado operation operated by three triplet sisters and a company ready for its next competitive venture at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, scheduled for October 6 – 8, 2016.
Shine Brewing’s ownership structure is certainly unique. I can’t think of any other brewery in the United States that is owned by triplet sisters and that fact alone makes it intriguing. But what really matters is the beer and Shine Brewing is ready to showcase its brewing expertise once again at GABF 2016. This will be Shine’s third appearance at the competition and, if things go well, the brewery hopes to emerge with more medals to sit alongside the 2014 GABF Bronze Medal the team won for Ahimsa Gluten Free Beer. Head brewer Mike Kasian looks forward to this year’s competition and the many new friends the brewery hopes to make.
“We are prepared for the tough competition this year with a world-class selection of experimental beers,” said Kasian. “But beyond the competition, our favorite part of GABF is interacting with the attendees and seeing people’s faces light up when they taste our beer.”
Shine Brewing is owned by the triplet Emich sisters, Jennifer, Jessica, and Jill- three ladies who are entrepreneurs on multiple levels. Residents in Boulder know them well, not just for brewing delicious beer, but also for preparing and serving amazing food. Their Shine Restaurant and Gathering Place is a nutrition and sustainability- focused operation that strives to use only the freshest and most natural ingredients when making food while paying constant attention to ethical business practices. Part of the mission with the brewing side of the business is to educate the populace about beer and its role in good health. Jill Emich says the desire to marry delicious food with great beer and a healthy lifestyle is one of the important driving forces in the sisters’ business.
“Our restaurant is based around holistic food and sustainable practices, and our goal is to spark a conversation about how beer doesn’t have to mean beer gut, but can be about a HEALTHY gut. We love watching women come to the forefront in all things beer. We can’t wait to share it with everyone!”, exclaims Jill
Shine Brewing Company will enter four beers in this year’s great American Beer Festival, including Ahimsa Gluten Free Ale, Shiva Import Porter, Down Dog IPA, and Pahoda Pilz. GABF 2016 attendees are welcome to stop by and visit the ladies, taste some beer, and share conversation at booth I14 in the Mountain Region. I plan to make my way to the Shine Brewing booth to try some great beer and meet the ladies behind it and I encourage other attendees to do the same. Jennifer, Jessica, and Jill await your presence.
