Spoetzl Brewery, best known for its Shiner brand, is lending a helping hand to non- profit organizations throughout Texas as residents struggle to clean up and return life to normal in Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath. The Shiner, Texas brewery has pledged $500,000 to the healing effort and will distribute the funds among different non- profit organizations.
Hurricane Harvey made landfall in the seaside city of Rockport, Texas, causing extensive damage that will take weeks and even months to repair. But the most extensive damage was felt in the Houston area and surrounding locales, mainly due to relentless levels of rainfall and flooding. Here at Great Beer Now, we rode out the storm and while there was one close call that almost flooded our headquarters, we were among the lucky who escaped largely unaffected.
The half million dollar gift from Spoetzl Brewery will get divided among organizations already working to make a difference, among them the American Red Cross, Greater Houston Community Foundation, United Way of Greater Houston, Coastal Bend Community Foundation, United Way of the Coastal Bend, Feeding Texas, and Team Rubicon- an organization that supports emergency response teams. All money donated to these organizations is earmarked toward Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
Shiner, Taxes is located between Houston and San Antonio and Spoetzl Brewery did feel the storm’s effects. To prepare for the rain, Shiner’s brewery shut down production early, temporarily closing on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, to make sure employees were safe. The brewery then re-opened on Monday, August 28. Thankfully, damage was minimal but Shiner brewmaster Jimmy Mauric is quick to point out that practically everyone at the brewery was impacted to some degree.
“All of our employees have been affected in some way by this disaster. Nearly all of us have family or loved ones in Houston and along the Texas coast where the impact has been most devastating. We are praying for all those affected,” said Mauric.
Spoetzl Brewery has supported community efforts in the past, contributing money to Louisiana flood victims in 2016, Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in 2012, Hurricane Ike in Houston in 2008, and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The corporate philanthropy displayed by Shiner has benefitted thousands of needy citizens and we at Great Beer Now commend Spoetzl Brewery for its generous efforts.
