Cavalier Distributing, the craft beer and import specialist, announced a new partnership- one that will bring American Trappist beer into the homes of Ohioans. The new beer is Spencer Trappist Ale and it will be distributed immediately throughout the Buckeye state.
Trappist beer, which traces its roots to Belgium, isn’t usually associated with the United States. There are, in fact, only 11 Trappist breweries in the world and Spencer Brewery happens to be the only Trappist brewery in the USA. The Trappist monks of St. Joseph’s Abbey, located in Spencer, Massachusetts, are responsible for introducing the world to Trappist brewed American beer and with the addition of Ohio, Spencer Brewing can spread its brewing skill and influence to yet another new region of the country.
Father Isaac Keeley, director of Spencer Brewery, is proud to honor the beer making Trappist tradition with an American version of a much revered style.
“We’re just so happy and grateful to be given the opportunity to share this labor of love with the world,” says Keeley. “We hope that by making this beer, we can both honor the centuries-old Trappist tradition, and contribute to this exciting time in American brewing history.”
Spencer Trappist Ale is golden/orange in color with fruity nuances, light hop bitterness, and a dry finish. With an alcohol level of only 6.5 percent by volume, it is significantly tamer than many of the heavyweight Trappist beers produced in other parts of the world. But this also makes the beer more agreeable and compatible to a wider range of foods, events, palates, etc.
Spencer Trappist Ale begins arriving in Ohio stores immediately. The beer currently has an 89 rating in Beer Advocate and has received positive praise from critics and others. It is certainly a beer worth seeking out and Spencer Brewery is definitely a place I will keep on my radar for future distribution.
