Spoetzl Brewery, the Texas- based brewery widely known for its popular Shiner brand of beer, has announced a new collaboration brew. This special, limited edition beer is called Spoetzl Marzen and it is brewed in collaboration with Balcones Distilling, another popular Texas-based operation.
Marzen is, of course, another name for Oktoberfest and Spoetzl Marzen is brewed in the Oktoberfest tradition, using Munich malt and Hallertau and Hersbrucker hops. The beer is krausened two times before being placed in Balcones single malt whiskey barrels for aging. The result is a beer that features flavors such as oak, caramel, and whiskey with an alcohol level of 11 percent by volume and 32 IBU of bitterness.
Tom Fiorenzi, Director of Brewing at Spoetzl Brewery, says the new beer reflects the highest quality standards and everything from the flavor to the color are certain to grab consumers’ attention.
“For 109 years, Spoetzl Brewery has delivered best in class craft beer. We are excited to get back to our roots with the second release of our small batch brewing program. Barrel-aging is wildly popular from beer to coffee, not to mention the original way to make a Märzen-style lager. For this reason, it was great to work with our friends over at Balcones Distilling, the most awarded Texas whisky, as the tannins from whisky-soaked barrels naturally increase the clarity of the beer while also imparting a unique roundness and incredible color to the beer, ” said Fiorenzi.
Jared Himstedt, Head Distiller at Balcones Distilling, says the partnership with Spoetzl Brewery is a great match between the two companies and one he hopes will continue.
“We are thrilled to be working with the Spoetzl Brewery team on this collaboration as it’s not every day that you find another brand that shares your dedication to quality, craftsmanship and flavor complexity,” said Himstedt. “This is a great opportunity to work closely with the team at Spoetzl Brewery and we look forward to continued collaboration with them in the future.”
Spoetzl Marzen will be available for a limited-time throughout Texas starting on October 1, 2018 and continuing until supplies are depleted. The suggested retail price is $14.99 for a 750ml bottle. It does cost a little more than the typical craft beer, yes, but for quality at this level, the price is worth it. Grab yourself a bottle if you get the chance and enjoy this limited edition beer, courtesy of Spoetzl Brewery and Balcones Distilling.
